Or the lack of handling, you mean? The path she was taking in season 2 was compelling, as she went from being a callous, indifferent drone for HW to discovering that life is worth protecting. But then in season 3 all the growth stops and she's reduced to being a one-note background character character with zero depth. I was really hoping there'd be more stuff with her learning about the human experience and using her engineering skills to aid the CG's in their battle with evil (IE, building gadgets/tech for them like Q in the James Bond movies), but no, she's just an unfunny comic relief character who makes high-pitched mouth noises.

The point where I realized things weren't going to improve was during the human zoo arc, when they use the ruby ship to leave earth. I was certain that Peridot was going to accompany the CG's as the ship's pilot/engineer on this dangerous rescue mission, thus cementing her as a fully-fledged member of the team. Doesn't that seem logical to you? Her background is in tech and machinery, plus she'd be more familiar with this fancy new HW tech on the ship than the other CG's. You could have also derived some comedy from Peridot pretending to still be loyal to HW while at the zoo (IE, she'd be so enthusiastic about doing cool espionage shit that she'd almost blow the CG's cover).

But of course, we can't do anything fun like that. The first two seasons were too interesting so now everything has to be mediocre and simplistic.

It's not even like having episodes about the human townsfolk is an inherently bad idea, there just to be a clearer connection to the gem plot. In the first season there's lots of nice overlap between the human problems and gem problems Steven encounter. Usually it's a mundane conflict being exacerbated by magic or a gem monster.
