When his brother challenged him, he turned up late again.

I think by that point he also had enough of a rep that if he didn't clear out pronto after a fight he'd have to fight a small army of dudes looking to take his head for bragging rights.
Which IIRC was also part of the showing up late thing was about; something about rowing in so late so that he could get out as the tide turned and that any pursuers would be fighting the incoming tide. Again, been a while since I looked at it, but the boat oar was because the guy he was fighting had some particular technique and Musashi knew he needed to have longer reach to win. Since he couldn't get a longer sword in time he used a stick to get the reach he'd need.
