I really enjoyed it. I used to like the Venom antihero miniseries back in the 90s and this was just like that. Spider-man was not really necessary IMHO. I like the whole horror and body-horror element of the character, and just the weird slimy, morphing nature of the symbiote. The buddy cop interaction of Venom and Eddie is great too. It was fun and edgy. I don't think it missed much by not being R-rated as audiences might not have gone along with the character if he was shown graphically decapitating people. On the other hand an R would help with Carnage for the next movie.
I haven't read much Venom comics recently. I hear people like those Agent Venom ones with Flash. I've been resistant to those because I'm used to Eddie but maybe I'll give them a shot.
Any other good similar things involving symbiote-like creatures/suits I should look into? I heard the manga Parasyte is a similar concept. Also I've heard of Venom being compared to Spawn and XO-Manowar since they have living suits.

weird how no one brings up the fact this movie was forgotten (outside rare threads like this one) within like a month and a half of release, whereas most MCU films are constantly criticized both leading up to and after release. Once Eddie got Venom and the movie went full camp it was great. Problem was he should have got Venom much earlier on which would have allowed for more fun shit and for their relationship to develop so V's U-turn about the Earth didn't feel so out-of-nowhere. All of that stuff with his ex should have been relegated to another movie.

Venom goes from being an angry shithead to friends with Eddie and caring about Earth in no time flat and it's super janky. There was that scene where they were on top of the tower and Venom mentions how peaceful it is and how he's starting to like it there, which came out of fucking nowhere and makes no sense as to how Venom got there so abruptly. Had they had 15-20 minutes of maybe a few minor action scenes and actual legit bonding between the two of them I'd understand it, but it's blatantly obvious that the movie was chopped up.
