How often does batman turn out anti-gun? I kinda figured he wouldn't be dumb enough to deflect the problem to the gun rather than the criminal, and that it's more of a fear tactic that he doesn't use guns himself

He's not really right or wrong. A gun is philosophically antithetical to batman. A gun has to be used with the intent to kill. Batman is morally opposed to killing. Yes, a gun would be useful if they were there with the intent to kill, but he isn't. Batgirl might be willing to kill, but she's not arguing the merits of killing a villain. She's arguing the merits of a gun as a tool. It doesn't matter if it's an effective tool or not if it's a tool for a job you aren't prepared to do.

The bigger issue is what a law abiding citizen with a gun is able to do, which is basically kill a person where legally allowed to do so. Batman chooses not to kill, so not carrying a gun makes sense. Telling others THEY should make the same choice is ridiculous though, because he's telling them they should die over choosing to defend themselves.

Guns are the great equalizer. You don't need years of training since you were 12 years old with Tibetan monks or whatever to be able to use one. Its what allows joe schmoe to live his life securely without having a billion dollars to throw at people to handle his shit for him while he LARPS as whatever makes him feel better about himself.

This is why it's hard for me to believe Bats has never killed anyone, there's such a fine line between a blow that 'just' knocks someone out and one that caves in something with lethal consequences.
