But on top of that, the way they interact with each other, the emotions they express, the depth of friendships and relationships in this show... it surpasses most live action and anime to say nothing of cartoons.
And it shows that the crew put soul (not to mention effort) into their work too because that's the only way such a show could happen.

That Miraculous Ladybug garbage (which this series unfortunately spawned in a sense) does not deserve the musical genius of Noam Kaniel and Alain Garcia. And to add insult to injury, they're now mostly known for that shit because it's on a network that's actually popular.

No, let's really be honest user. W.I.T.C.H. has far more in common with Avatar: The Last Airbender than it does with ANY magical girl show. In fact I'd argue it barely even qualifies as such.

The first season is practically a carbon copy of ATLA in terms of plot. Except there is serious continuity and just about every episode matters and as such you don't have those kid-friendly "yay we learned a lesson today" stories like in ATLA Book 1. (In fact the shit the W.I.T.C.H. girls get away with is so realistic it's basically taking the piss out of all the bullshit "moral lessons" these types of cartoons try to teach.) Also the relationships are way better especially since they ACTUALLY FUCKING KISS IN THE FIRST SEASON, what a novel fucking concept

The second season goes completely above and beyond anything even ATLA did and puts even Ehasz's best writing to shame. If the series was already more clever than 99% of cartoons in season 1, here it just completely destroys all other Western animation. As TV Tropes puts it, it's like the whole show is a game of chess - and it's fucking beautiful.

Then there's the characterization () the soundtrack () and the fucking dialogue which is written on a level that not only makes the characters hyper-realistic but also contains the most genuinely funny jokes ever written for a cartoon. I hate to pick on Avatar so much but even the humor there is a joke in comparison.

And finally of course, there's the animation which again puts ATLA to shame I'm afraid - it's anime-style too but so much smoother, and the girls are so much more attractive for some reason as well. It's quite shocking that an indie studio most people have never heard of beat out Nickelodeon in technical animation quality.

To me, this show always felt like someone really liked Sailor Moon and wanted to make their own, but also had no idea about the mahou shoujo genre and its history, so they ended up doing a generic teen fantasy with some magical girls sprinkled on top. It's not bad by any means, it's just feels like I'm watching Disney Power Rangers instead of Super Sentai, if you know what I'm saying.

That's pretty much how Disney saw the original comics, so you're more correct than you might realize. Though the original authors wanted to make something rather different - and got fired for their trouble.

Which in turn makes it all the more shocking that this supposed pale imitation of an already overproduced anime genre wipes the floor with every other cartoon in quality, even the supposedly more "serious" ones.

Funny you should ask it like that, because the big problems with them are basically the same: unbelievably formulaic plots to the point that it's insulting to the viewer's intelligence, hack dialogue and terrible "humor", and characterization that's literally non-existent for the most part and incredibly poor where it does exist. DP also has the bonus issue of an incredibly bad artstyle, dare I say worse than CalArts.

In short, they're great examples of shows that only got popular because they aired in the right timeslots on the right network - probably some exec's personal favorites.
(IOW the exact opposite of W.I.T.C.H., which shows that no level of quality, no matter how high, can avoid failure.)

Precure is a show for little girls.

It's a shitty ripoff of Evanescence (i.e. whatever was in vogue back then) and Danny Phantom's theme (which not coincidentally came out in the same year). It also completely misses the mark emotionally - it doesn't sound mystical at all, it just sounds like typical EPIC USA USA shit. And then there's the fact that it's never used/remixed for the BGM in the actual show, unlike the original which is reused constantly (maybe because it actually sounds beautiful).

The cartoon may have been produced in France but it's very obviously set in the US. They mention US locations occasionally and use the imperial system in the original English version, among other things like the school system. Plus all of the writing was done by Americans (as opposed to storyboarding etc.)

Even the comics were apparently set in the US though it's more ambiguous/confusing there.

Something was really lost in translation to the show because Barbucci and Canepa are pretty solid unique artists but they probably got asked to increase the Anime for the comic and then the show runners increased it again, that's what the kids like right. And it doesn't look particularly good.

Ironically I've heard quite a few complaints about her voice being too deep for Irma. But even if that's the case, she has the best comic timing of any of the VAs (except maybe Steve Blum) which more than makes up for it.

I watched the first two episodes at thewatchcartoononline.tv/anime/w-i-t-c-h and I've tried to keep an open mind.

I liked the fantasy setting and the evil white-haired elf lord from the other dimension. I don't really like most of the girls' character designs or their guardian costume designs. Maybe they will grow on me if I watch more episodes? The characters are supposed to be from different backgrounds, but they don't really look like the races that they're supposed to represent (especially the Chinese one - she just looks like a pale Caucasian girl with purple hair and big weird ears). The black character has a really annoying voice actress and a weird haircut with a rattail on the side for some reason. The blonde one is huge bitch to everyone for no reason - I'm not sure why the other characters even tolerate her other than they need an Earthbender for their team. Some of the creature designs were kind of cool (the snake guy, the moat monster, the reptilian mounts, etc.). The animation is decent at least and there are more action scenes that you usually see in a girls' show. Some of the backgrounds are really nice and really well done, like the scenes with the castle in the other dimension. The rock music is a little distracting and makes the show seem dated, but most of the other atmospheric music works pretty well.

I probably would have liked this a lot more when I was younger. I don't know if I'm going watch any more episodes or not.

From the few episodes that I've seen, she seems to be a vain, spoiled brat who constantly belittles those around her and always has to be the center of attention. I'm not seeing this "good friend" thing that you guys are talking about. On a different show, she would be the bully who makes the female protagonist's life hell. On this show, she's a main character for some reason.

The comic, once again, is way better at conveying more character depth, honestly.

To be quite frank user, I hate that character archetype at least as much as you do. That's why I liked Cornelia so much - she makes a mockery of it. She's isn't the girl who's like "get lost loser, I'm too popular for you" who seems to be in EVERY other cartoon ever - she hangs out with the rest of them as just another girl in the group, takes Irma's snark without batting an eye, lets herself be guilted into a rescue mission she's afraid of and then once she's on said mission isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. And she shows genuine concern for Caleb before she even knows who he is, even if her attack on Will for letting him get caught went too far.
To borrow a phrase from a certain movie: she's not an alpha bitch - she's just trying so hard to sound like one. And it's bizarrely endearing.

But if you haven't got to episode 4 yet, I strongly suggest you at least watch up to then. Episode 4 really spotlights her character and how she is almost a parody of the alpha bitch archetype.

Slice of life is nothing but characterization.

In reality, you should use any opportunity for characterization but a change of pace is nice and things like the daily life of the characters outside of the plot is fun to see.

And the voice acting is the best of any cartoon and (again) an order of magnitude better than Avatar's in particular, which is probably the closest competition. Just compare Katara's emotional acting to Will's for example - objectively it's not even close. Or Sokka's comic timing to Irma's

Will's voice is just beyond amazing. Why Kelly Stables doesn't do almost any VA work is a mystery to me. And Hay Lin's voice is really cute yet still mature-sounding, a nice combo.

The other mains are a bit weird at first but grow on you as you watch the show, and by the end of it you couldn't imagine any other voices for any of them.

But where the show really shines is in the VAs for the other characters. Phobos, Cedric, and Nerissa all have practically Hollywood-tier talent behind them. Then you have Grey DeLisle as Miranda, Steve Blum as Raythor, etc. And Caleb's VA is so good he keeps getting mistaken for Zuko's by those unfamiliar with the show. Disney spent top dollar because they really believed in the show back when Eisner was in charge.

As I said in Irma's VA may sound too old or whatever but she more than makes up for it in delivery. It makes the already brilliant humor twice as funny.

1. Plot
W.I.T.C.H. has basically zero filler and incredibly strong continuity, unlike ATLA in which only 3/4 of Book 2 is a more-or-less continuous story. ATLA's entire first season is filled with childish moral lessons like a typical cartoon for kids, W.I.T.C.H. literally takes the piss out of that by having the girls abuse their powers regularly and pretty much always get away with it. All of ATLA but especially Book 3 has well-known plot holes and asspulls, while in W.I.T.C.H. the story actually flows logically. Every season of Avatar ends with a deus ex machina, while both seasons of W.I.T.C.H. have spectacular endings which completely avoid that. And season 2 of W.I.T.C.H. has plot twists throughout all 26 episodes that put the last few episodes of Book 2 in ATLA to shame.

2. Characters
Overall ATLA's characters tack much closer to American cliches and stereotypes, which is unsurprising considering the Euro influence of W.I.T.C.H. Will essentially takes Aang's role but she is a great leader by being incredibly clever and strategic, even though until season 2 she doesn't have an elemental power of her own at all which is the exact opposite of Aang's DEM-level power. Irma may be a sarcastic ass but unlike Toph she isn't a self-confident bitch. Taranee is the smart one of the group - unlike Sokka, whose supposed intelligence is actually stuff that a literal child could come up with and/or doesn't actually make any sense (see The Northern Air Temple and The Drill for great examples of this hack writing). Cornelia is a mockery of the valley girl alpha bitch archetype because she often talks like one but doesn't act like it in the slightest - one of the most unique characters I've ever seen in general. And Hay Lin is a dreamer but just as grounded as the rest of them when it comes to actual important things - she pulls this off much more than Aang who despite being the Avatar acts way more like a child.

I haven't mentioned Katara yet. That's because she's the main vehicle for feminism in Avatar. The show literally starts off with her ranting about sexism - seriously, Nickelodeon? And then you have The Waterbending Scroll and The Waterbending Master, which really speak for themselves. Bryke are actually on record as specifically wanting a show where the sister has powers but the brother doesn't - ugh.

And that brings me to Caleb. Despite not having Zuko's level of backstory (which is not such a bad thing because said backstory is really overused as an excuse in Avatar) he is much more endearing as a character overall. That's because (a) the show has him befriend the MCs right from the start so we see him grow closer to them, and (b) Zuko is a dick throughout ATLA, even after he joins the Gaang. The only person he really grows close to is his uncle, after he betrays him and then goes back to the good side only when he has literally no other choice. He's basically Terra from Teen Titans - an overrated-as-fuck character with a sob story and sex appeal (albeit to a different gender) who switches sides whenever the odds look convenient. And again, even after he does so he never truly becomes friends with any of the Gaang - it always feels like a cold business relationship.

Then there's Matt who already proves himself to be completely different from the standard boyfriend in a magical girl show stereotype at the end of season 1 and then just blows away expectations altogether in season 2 - the musical episode in particular is peak kino. There's Blunk who is so much more of a character than Appa let alone Momo - in fact much like Cornelia with her archetype he puts the "small annoying creature" archetype to shame by being incredibly useful to have around and having a distinct and dare I say interesting personality with his smuggler shtick (being a talking creature helps of course).

And of course, the villains. Nerissa is peak villain kino who really speaks for herself - one of the greatest fictional chessmasters ever. But even Phobos and Cedric wipe the floor with Ozai and his puddle-tier depth of characterization. Miranda may not have anything like Azula's backstory but much like with Sokka's intelligence her cleverness is applied much more logically - Azula mostly wins by being an unbelievable Mary Sue. (It's one of the biggest issues with the incredibly overrated Crossroads of Destiny in particular, but shows up in many other episodes as well.)

I can't talk about every single character in W.I.T.C.H. but rest assured that many of the minor characters have more depth to them than some of the supposedly major ones in ATLA (looking at you Suki).

3. Setting
Here TLA may be more developed at first glance - the nations are a genuinely interesting concept. But it falls apart upon closer inspection. There's a lot of cultural stuff in ATLA that makes no sense - why would the Northern Water Tribe be sexist in selecting fighters if bending eliminates the physical differences between men and women that cause that IRL? Why does the Foggy Swamp Tribe exist - did they get teleported from real-life America somehow? Why do many older characters have accents but not the kids - Gyatso actually seems to have developed an accent as he got older!? And of course, the really big and obvious questions like the unrealistic demise of ALL the airbenders and the fact that it's the fire nation and not the earthbenders who conquer the world despite the latter having an advantage on a scale not known in real-world wars. Finally, the fact that ATLA is set in a technological distant past makes it much less relatable, and given the existence of bending it can feel like an unnecessary crutch the show relies on.

W.I.T.C.H. goes all-in on stereotypes of both the modern and medieval worlds, and uses them to its advantage. You've got some incredibly creative stuff in Meridian (much of which didn't even exist in the original comics btw - the first season showrunners said they made up at least 20 creatures for the show themselves) mixed with more traditional evil-looking castles and the like - that may not exactly be original but really work to set the tone and atmosphere of those scenes. On the flipside (literally, because in W.I.T.C.H. even the fucking scene transitions are creative) there's Heatherfield which while hardly awe-inspiring makes things interesting with the girls having real-life problems that are much more relatable for a modern viewer, especially in season 2 when the Muggles of that world start to become more of an obstacle for their duties.

4. Relationships
I'm putting this as a separate category because it's so incredibly important yet often overlooked. And I don't even mean romantic relationships first and foremost - it's friendships that often aren't written convincingly as well, but that is often overlooked because shipping.

The girls in W.I.T.C.H. form an unbelievably healthy, genuine, close-knit social circle that puts most fictional friendships to shame. And yet it's barely ever brought up or addressed directly - it's so obvious it doesn't have to be. Even when they very rarely fight, it's a lot like Cornelia's character - all bark and no bite. If one of them is ever not there for the others, you empathize with her instead of hating her.

On the other hand, you have the Gaang. Zuko as already mentioned is barely part of it. Suki is barely a character. Toph is a self-confident bitch most of the time. Only the original trio has anything resembling genuine friendship among the Gaang, but even then it's screwed up by the whole thing between Aang and Katara.

And that finally brings me to the romance. THIS IS WHERE W.I.T.C.H. REALLY WIPES THE FUCKING FLOOR WITH EVERY OTHER CARTOON IN EXISTENCE - COMBINED. Fucking shit, the depth, sincerity, and just plain "correctness" of the romantic relationships in this show is an EMBARRASSMENT not only for Western animation but also virtually all modern media.

The standout examples of course are the two main relationships, which are not coincidentally with the two male characters who get an enormous amount of screentime in this supposed girl show. Let's start with the obvious first: THEY ACTUALLY KISS IN THE FIRST SEASON. Can you IMAGINE that? Second, unlike ATLA the romance is developed from BOTH directions right from the START. Aside from a few minor teases very early on (Because why not? It's cute.) the upcoming pairings are very obvious yet still hit you out of nowhere because you don't expect them to get together that fast, or in the way they do.

But then you have the more plot-relevant aspects. Caleb's story involves one of the only WELL-WRITTEN love triangles in all of history, proving once and for all that tropes are not bad. But it's Matt who as mentioned before completely obliterates any preconceived notions of what a cartoon relationship is like, and produces raw emotion in the viewer of a type that nothing even in the great Avatar: The Last Airbender, the supposed champion of cartoons, comes close to. What an incredible story - and what an upgrade from the comics, I might add.

Finally, the other girls get into relationships (or try to in one case) with characters who have very little screentime. But this show makes even that endearing somehow, by maximizing every second said characters do get to show off not only why they get together but also their own personality traits.

(Man, writing this is exhausting. But there's still all the technical stuff: dialogue, animation, and music...)

5. Dialogue/humor/voice acting
For all the hype over the great and mighty Weisman, it's the first season of this show that was helmed by actual professional comedy writers - and it shows. The humor is incredibly raw and biting, and there are multiple adult jokes in the earlier episodes, especially the two-part pilot (one has to wonder if Disney caught on later). Yet it also flows naturally - compare that to ATLA's humor, which while it definitely has its share of genuine zingers is often so incredibly forced it's just painful to see how badly the writers wanted to cram a joke in.

Much the same thing can be said about the dialogue in general. This is greatly helped by the modern setting, of course - the first season showrunners in particular seem to take every possible opportunity to throw in surprisingly intelligent real-world references (that STILL don't seem forced!) but Weisman is no slouch in this department, even incorporating a fucking real-life poem into the show. Even so, it's not like Avatar tries to maintain antiquated linguistics to match its time period counterpart, aside from corny jokes.

The voice acting blows away ATLA's, period. Will being the main character (but not in a constant spotlight like Aang) obviously needs a great VA the most - and she got one, with Kelly Stables providing some of the best voice work I've ever heard on TV. Compared to her emotional range, Mae Whitman's Katara falls incredibly flat. Or take Irma vs. Sokka, both resident comedians - but Candi Milo's comedic timing puts Jack DeSena's to shame, though it can be hard to compare directly because of how much better the humor itself is.

Of course, it's a bit unfair to compare actors with years of experience to barely-starting-out kids back then, but that's kind of the point: Disney spent top dollar on experience, and it really showed. Much like Avatar, W.I.T.C.H. also features Grey DeLisle and Dee Bradley Baker in major roles, but then you also have Steve Blum and Greg Cipes (hey, another Teen Titans connection!) whose voice work is so high-quality that it's often mistaken for Zuko's VA's - and we all know what high regard Dante Basco is held in among voice actors.

6. Animation
The one and only thing ATLA has over W.I.T.C.H. without a doubt is choreography. Though W.I.T.C.H. never really stood a chance in the first place in that department - Avatar had an actual martial arts expert on board from the start.

But in other aspects, it's quite the other way around. W.I.T.C.H. has significantly smoother animation - Avatar often seems like it's trying to imitate anime's low framerate but doing a very poor job of it. And then there's the infamous difference between ATLA's animation studios, which persists even through Book 3 when one of the studios is swapped out for another - the characters in every other episode do not look like they are supposed to. W.I.T.C.H. only changes studios between seasons, yet somehow maintains a higher level of consistency between them in terms of character design than ATLA does between consecutive episodes!

7. Music
Ah, last but more like first: the most subjective category - yet the one I possibly feel strongest about. Let me be clear: Avatar's music is incredible in its own right. Once again, experience is everything. Jeremy Zuckerman and Benjamin Wynn have some serious talent, that is for sure. But Noam Kaniel and Alain Garcia are industry veterans with literally decades of musical work behind them, to the point that they composed for each and every single one of SIP Animation's original productions including W.I.T.C.H., which as far as I can tell is something basically unheard of in other modern cartoon studios.

Unlike ATLA's composers who could go wild and experiment, in W.I.T.C.H. the task was significantly more complicated - write music that sounds contemporary and yet mystical at the same time. W.I.T.C.H.'s composers accomplished this with flying colors, of course. Noam Kaniel is on record as talking about the importance of (a) researching current trends in music and (b) accepting criticism of your own work, and these principles seem to have contributed hugely to the sheer beauty of W.I.T.C.H.'s music.

A special shout-out goes to the original theme. Now, there's a bastardized American version which has nothing to do with the show and makes an absolute mockery of the composers' genius (and as if to match, that opening also features quite possibly the worst visuals ever of any cartoon intro) - if you happen to like it, there is a full-length version available that's separate from the series. But the real, original theme has an absolutely breathtaking melody, and if the first season opening is very solid but nothing to write home about (yes, the opening changes between seasons...) the second one uses the same song but with a stunning remix and quite possibly the most gorgeously and creatively animated cartoon intro of all time.

Plot, characterization, setting, relationships, dialogue, humor, voice acting, animation, music - it aces them all. W.I.T.C.H. is truly the the magnum opus of Western animation.

I'm just saying you raise expectations too high. People will either find you annoying and write the show off entirely, or watch a couple episodes and enjoy it less than what you've built it up as and quit. If you were a little more subdued you would have more luck promoting the show.

After it ended in 2008 ATLA wasn't remotely as popular until LOK came out, and especially not until LOK Book 2 ironically enough. Outside of Yea Forums itself it was hard to even find active discussion at times. I remember how hard it was to find YouTube reactions in particular, it was much like for W.I.T.C.H. today in that reactors literally refused to do it because it wasn't popular enough.
Now it has an immense active fandom with an enormous subreddit, and it probably has the most YT reactions of any cartoon - yes including all the current ones.

W.I.T.C.H. meanwhile had like 4 forums until a few years ago. Now it has 1 that's all but dead, and the entirety of the remaining fandom is basically a few dozen people on Tumblr who aren't even particularly active.
