Because they are dumb. Whats the point besides "it looks cool!!!"?
When they crop up in media, usually books, and someone tries to explain them, its described as either runes/words of power or mathematical equations that somehow screw with reality. Neither is particularily exciting, because in the first case its just writing "summon demon Bartimaeus from the fire dimension and bind him to my will" in what is either a code or nonsense gibberish, if the author decides to include any detail at all. In the case of math, its also going to be gibberish, because if it was remotely realistic some autist would "solve" the equation and be dissapointed when they cant suddenly fly.

In Yea Forums or Yea Forums or even Yea Forums magic circles are almost exclusivly cosmetic. I have yet to see a fun or interesting mechanically sound magic system be developed that has clearly understood and identifiable circle stricturing. Its always just squiggles and jewish stars.

Yea Forums magic is sparkly

I can't tell if they were inspired by Dr Strange or not, because the original did have one (1) circle thingy, but it was on the floor youtube.com/watch?v=UoPqoctg21k

>identifiable circle structuring

I mean, FMA:B basically did that.

>circles are essentially balanced circuits of either tectonic or thermal energy in the earth
>have to be perfect circles so as to not deform whatever is created within the circle
>this energy is converted into electricity and then subsequent forms of energy when the alchemist channels it
>hence the sparks and lightning
>resistance can be introduced into the tectonic method, reducing the efficiency of transmutations, one example being the use of human souls to act as one giant resistor across an entire country
>all transmutations must obey energy and mass conservation laws
>exception being the human soul since it's power is potentially unlimited, but it's hard to harvest it properly
>certain alchemists can skip the drawing the circle step, if they know the intricacies of the circle they're trying to create and the energy needed, by smacking their palms together
>this does however require a download of forbidden knowledge, science and mathematics from Truth
>any alchemist trying to break said rules while directly triggering the transmutation, or who doesn't get the energy equations accurate enough, gets their shit nicked by said entity
>base circles are enough with simple designs, but annotation helps improve their reliability, and how they actually work
>So circles with a shape in them are fine if you understand the physical processes that occur, otherwise write out the steps
>Instead of being forcibly told unknown knowledge, certain alchemists carve their favourite go to circles on gloves, gauntlets, or directly via tattoos, which they can smack on the ground without having to draw the circle first

There's a lot more stuff, but it all makes sense, at least for the setting. Automail is basically bullshit though.

>but it all makes sense
It's just generic magic

This is how a man of science would view magic.

It looks like he wants to keep that spell as a pet

Sauce?

Doomsday Clock 9

Eh, closer to piezo/thermoelectric power harvesting, with a supervisor who beats the shit out of you if you get the math wrong, but isn't allowed to punish you if you cut corners with this one very unethical method.

Because Christians gonna freak

Came to post this. Geometry and magic is some real shit, not the cute "wave a wand and say a magic word" magic.

Is it weird my mind always goes to weebshit whenever I see this things

>Geometry and magic is some real shit,
idk whenever I see those I always think of yugioh

They look too occult for some places in the US. There are still people in this country that think Harry Potter is a ploy by Satan to normalize witchcraft.

Loved magic circles in "old" fairy tail.

Oh go read a Brandon Sanderson book you faggot.
Alternatively, Warrior Cats.

Depictions of ritual magic, especially with a "mathematical" character, are still kind of taboo in the west. They get relegated to horror or other things aimed at adults. Japanese don't care because it's all foreign nonsense to them.

Why aren't cute male magicians a thing in Yea Forums media

And Yu-Gi-Oh got it from real shit.

Funnily enough, if magic existed in the real world like it did in Harry Potter, Muggles would have every reason to hate the magical establishment.

>Every NWO conspiracy theory is proven right, albeit not in the way they imagined
>There's a secret elite who view the rest of the world as untermensch who deserve to die, or 'the poor cripples who we must protect'
>Goes as far as to turn kids against parents, with parents
>Rowling confirmed that magic inheritance is PURELY genetic, meaning muggle borns are just throwbacks from Squib lineage, but also that wizards are literally a genetic supremacy cult
>Only wizards who want to come out openly in the world are supremacists who view Muggles as slaves
>The rest are those who never want to rejoin full society, or share the burden of problems, because it's too much trouble
>Magical currency is worth much, much more than standard currency, to the point where it's a wonder wizards don't just fleece muggles for all eternity and cause an economic crash every three seconds
>The no maj segregation deal becomes creepier when you realise Muggle borns in the US would essentially be seperated from their parents forever
>Any wizard who wants to understand how muggle technology works, and combine it with magic, is seen as a lunatic rather than an asset
>It's never really shown how magical society ensures the secrecy of non magical parents and siblings of magic users, but it most likely involves mind wipes
>Which either break the victim, or are reversible

The way the world is portrayed works fine in the books, but outside of it just becomes intensely creepy. Why are there NO factions that want to just be a part of society?

People complain about Dumbledore being a power bottom or whatever, but Rowling's story on the follies of prejudice turns into a cautionary tale on the dangers of a two tiered society outside of it, with the message being that it may be okay as long as half the people don't realise it's two tiered?

Why do crossboarders always ask for the exact same shit that they've seen before a million of times but in Yea Forumsmedia? I don't get it.

>and say a magic word
This is the "real" shit. As old as the idea of spirits/gods/supernatural forces

Too complicated for the calarts grads

Cuz pentagrams. And then the soccer moms spit out their Starbucks latte in shock and complain.

Satan

I dare ya. Find any magic fight better than this one.

Chaika a cute

does Yea Forums even do magic battles? they're usually two guys doing martial arts with the occasional blast thrown

Naruto I guess?

Doesn't the magical world exist mainly because the "lower" muggles allow it to continue? I remember Rowling saying that in a war the mages would be overpowered easily since any muggle can hold a weapon capable of ending the life of someone while only a few magicians are competent enough to be of use on anything outside of their very specific talents

becuase the west sees wizards as more wise men types which is also associated with being older

Negima manga is really good at magic.

Wizards would be so good at cloak and dagger shit that they could undermine a nation in a week.

>Negima manga is really good at magic.
And pretty bad at everything else

Rowling's wizard are also kinda of stupid at the very end

Even with a goddamn invisibility cloak they could barely even sneak around, they would try to kill someone important only to get shot by their bodyguards

Negima is not even good. Fucking shitty ass mess of shota bait. Fuck that manga. Fuck you

It's very popular in anime with a western or gothic tone. It's also in a lot of anime fighters.

>Spell that literally reaps people's soul and create sturdy ass barrier
>Still lose to gun

??????????????????????

Didn't they put up a shield in that newt movie that repelled bullets

You need to wave your wand and mumble some words for it to appear or for you to kill versus someone pointing something at you and pulling the trigger and thats not even going into bombs, IEDs, or long range rifles

I don't remember anyone using guns in either movie

Only a few top wizards can do that shit. I mean, the villain of the last movie wanted to take over the world because muggle's weapons were getting way too powerful.

that's more of a summoning thing. Fantasy magic stories has a lot of that, I'd imagine.

Real old time magic was more about fetishes (as in items believed to how spiritual power) and sacrifices than magic circles

I still feel like magic should have some edge. I mean they can teleport, control minds, transform stuff, see the future, etc

>more about fetishes [...] than magic circles
In the tradition where magic circles come from they were one and the same.
