I hate weebs so goddamn much. So will you storytime it?

>also is Yea Forums into mecha?
Megas and Symbionic titan has a following aroung here, so I guess so.

>So will you storytime it?
Aliens attack humans, also they're a lot bigger than us.

Yeah, I've seen Robotech with my father when I was a kid in a retro channel in TV. It's pretty cool. It's good to see a nice crossboarder to vary.

me too and thanks for telling me about Megas and Symbionic titan

I'm kind of interested if they can make the Southern Cross part less then it was.

I had a few of the old Comico run, I liked it, pretty much followed the show, and generally pretty good artwork if I recall. Color was flat though.

I think I checked out an Antarctic Press issue but I wasn't into the artwork.

never post about robotech on /m/. they're butt mad that they can't get macross toys because of it (they don't care about any of the shows (except OG and plus) but they do like the toys).

SC really is an odd fit (Mospeada at least tech-wise is similar to macross enough that you can buy it's a sequel) and is literally filler in terms of production (bumps up the episode count so they can air it as syndication).

settle something for me:

what are the odds that becky sucrose actually played the robotech sentinels tabletop RPG? the spherisians are too eerily similar to gems to be a coincidence.

Attached: 1673783-spherisians_01.jpg (640x640, 96K)

sounds like it, a lot of western fans did play the Robotech sentinels tabletop RPG.

Probably. Too bad she didn't remember how to make things stupid awesome like in all paladium books.

I looked into this Harmony Gold thing. It genuinely angered me, and I don't even watch this stuff. Those guys are a right bunch of arseholes.

Yeah it's annoying. Especially when there were some fun games in it that had no chance of ever getting translated.

Any excuse to post some VFs really.

redpill me on harmony gold

Basically they've cockblocked Burgers from getting Macross content for over a decade due to their shitty policies thanks to how laws worked at the time
Its like if WEP prevented Golion (instead they flat out bought it since nobody gives a shit about Golion) or if Saban prevented Sentai DVD releases (that said, Haim's still guilty of his own shit).

Not just burgers. I am pretty sure it is the west as a whole unless I missed something here.

>that said, Haim's still guilty of his own shi
Tell me of Saban's dirt, user.

Chroma Squad

What about it? Wasn't that a fun little TRPG?

He tried cockblocking its release
That's why there's "inspired by Saban's Power Rangers" in small white text near the title

I know some dirt in Saban from an audio perspective.

He and Shuki Levy would always slap their names on as the composers for their shows, even though for the most part it wasn't them. Ron Wasserman is noted for singing all the rock songs Power Rangers, but Shuki Levy was credited as the "composer." Fucking false. It was Wasserman the entire time, with Jeremy Sweet joining in later. They had Ron ghostwriting music for a million shows, including the first 52 episode of Dragon Ball Z. Ron also got bullied out of doing the score for the original Power Rangers movie. The one with Ivan Ooze. For some reason they brought in a dude named Graeme Revell, with Wasserman only being offered to do a song for the flick. "Cross My Line" was a tune about how Saban fucked him.

It went beyond bullying Wasserman, though. Shit like the Digimon theme, and the different vocal songs for the dub? Done entirely by Paul Gordon (RIP), but with Levy and Saban added as credits.

The funny thing is that Saban credited himself under the pseudonym "Kussa Mahchi," but it was 100% him. Back during the DNC leaks in 2016, his email got put out, and it was [email protected]. Still using the name to this day.

Wew.

>Macross content
translation: toys

No, you unmitigated retard.

Toy are one of the few things that made it it seems. That and Macross Plus but the shows themselves are the issue. But at least it all gets some sort of subs these days

macross plus made it because at that time harmony gold's personnel was being headhunted by others. after HG got their house in order again, the toys stopped. otherwise /m/ won't shut up about new robotech toys being made.

this ain't /m/.

Nope, mecha is too much for me. Of all the cool combat vehicles you could make, why would you pick a giant human-like toy with oversized guns. I draw the line at power armor. It's a shame they are so underused in jap comics compared to mechas.

I read about the first 12 issues. The comics has some problems that make it wonky.

The Brian Wood issues have the problem of trying to shock Robotech fans by changing some things up like killing off Gloval than having Lisa take over. The problem is he also decides to the mars missions thing but now it's the leader of the Macross going and not just Lisa. It wants to change things but the problem is IF You do make it make sense because otherwise they are adapting the show and creating plot holes. Now the old show has plot holes too but come on.

Minmei is also a huge problem for the comic, one big problem with comic writers is romance. She's a bitch, acting like a well a American guy trying to write a Tsundere, because they don't want to have a teenager who fucks up her relationships by being oblivious.

It's a combinations of things that I feel make it wonky.

People just want the shows. The original Macross and Plus managed to make it to the west somehow but that's basically it. They can't even be legally picked up for streaming because of this. I remember when Macross Delta was coming out, it was like one of the only shows of that season not picked up for legal streaming

They are a real estate company that invested in some media properties back in the day. They bought the US distribution rights to three different shows back in the day (SDF Macross, Southern Cross, Mospedea) that had runtimes that made sense for Japan airing seasons but not american syndication. So they recut footage from all three shows and rewrote the whole thing into one big blended show with three different 'arcs' claiming to be a single continuing story. This was called Robotech.

As an experiment this isn't a bad thing, its a neat idea to try if nothing else. The problem is that while no one cares about Southern Cross or Mospedea, Macross went on to become a huge mecha franchise, comparable to Gundam. But most people in the states haven't heard of it (whereas Gundam is at least a recognizeable name even for casuals) because of Harmony Gold holding it hostage.

Which is its own weird clusterfuck of a story. See, Harmony Gold bought the US distribution rights for Macross from a company that had been hired to liscense the show overseas by the company that actually made and owned the franchise in Japan. So there is a middleman company involved here, right?

Harmony Gold claims that what they bought from the middleman company wasn't distribution of the original series, but total ownership of the property and all of its related imagery outside of Japan. According to Harmony gold's lawyers, They legally own Macross the moment you take a step off of Japanese soil. Forever.

The original company that made Macross, as you can imagine, calls bullshit on that because the middleman company couldn't have sold those rights because they never had them. This is the equivalent of renting a car from the airport with a contract so shakily defined that you then walk into the offices of Ford and say "I didn't just rent a Ford car, I just bought every Ford factory in the world for the low price of 40 dollars from this guy you never heard of."

The end result is that if Macross wants to be exported outside of Japan, a Harmony Gold vulture swoops down and says "You are not dealing with me in any way, you have no contract with me for this new show you made and you might not even be sending it to the US, but unless you pay me eleventy million dollars to fuck off I will tie you up in legal battles until the end of time. Pay my ransom or get fucked".

And, so far, Japan has looked at that and said "paying the ransom destroys any profit we would make on this. No deal."

So thats why there is no legal way to get Macross for western audiences. There was a legal battle that the Japanese creators won a few years ago that FINALLY means that Harmony Gold's bullshit contract will expire (in 2022, I think?) so maybe we will finally get something after that. But it still crippled the success of the franchise worldwide for longer than I have been alive, and it means that to get western audiences onboard you have to sell them on a bunch of decades old shows they have never heard of just to bring them up to speed. Which is an uphill battle to say the least.

get out

>up to speed
At least Macross tends to be relatively self contained. You can pick up wherever for the most part.

To be fair, Harmony Gold has really pissed in the well as far as Robotech's concerned. It's a little frustrating for Macross fans when there can be no worldwide releases because Harmony Gold owns the rights and refuses to give them up or do any more translations that aren't connected to their version of the Macross saga.

The only thing sadder than being a Macross fan being screwed over by HG is being a Robotech fan, because you are still getting screwed over by HG.

Harmony Gold will promise you all sorts of new Robotech properties, and then they release two episodes of a new show with all of the budget of a youtube video and can the project. Because they have to use the rights every so often to keep them from returning to the original owner.

There was a thread on /m/ years ago about a Robotech panel where they were showing off their new line of toys. Two of the display pieces fell apart inside of the display case, behind the protection of a glass enclosure. It was fucking tragic.

Remember when they brought Mark Hamill for that godawful movie?

youtu.be/4wYnlKlL7kE

BTW, they gave him three lines and killed him off, but advertised him as a main character.

the fuck is this???

Harmony Gold made a sequel to Robotech.

It retconned the shit out of everything in the novels, RPGs, and comics, but it's there.

Meanwhile, Macross fans had stuff like

youtu.be/XyM3d-szCRA

Harmony Gold *really* pissed in the pool.

> I think one of those women was actually a giant

What the actual fuck am I watching?

They're also not allowed to make animated material about any Macross-era characters or concepts. Only the Masters and The Next Generation characters.

So no Valkyries, no Zentraedi, etc.

The women was, in fact, a giant. Zentraedi, they're like 16 meters tall.

The entire gimmick of Macross is "We've got planes that turn into robots and also musicians and love triangles." An episode either has drama, dogfights in transforming planes, or someone singing. Always two of the three.

youtu.be/IVEQ7npJVQ0

Robotech kind of feels like what would happen if Power Rangers failed right out the gate.

Macross is space carrier ops with transforming jets, tons of missiles and grils or a j-rock band that act as bards. It is odd but you get used to it and sometimes they have catchy songs.
Plus and Zero were the two with the least of the singing
The aliens are giants

Have a webm

Thing is, it was pretty huge in America for a long time. Like, fucking gigantic. It was the introduction to anime for a huge number of people. The problem was that, well. There wasn't anything else Harmony Gold could use.

Once word got around just how badly they were screwing the Macross folks, not a lot of other anime guys were willing to give them a shot. They were working on American made sequels, but the money always fell through.

Unlike Power Rangers, which had new material coming out every year, Macross stuff was coming out only once every few years. And there weren't that many shows that had "Transforming military weapons against alien invaders" that could be turned into something Robotechy. Most of those shows were shonen-type and only had a few hero mechs, not entire armies.

I like the current writer and artist way better than the Wood and the stiff guy from the first issues, I hope he never leaves

Does someone who knows the original story can tell if they are near the end of the story or not?

Attached: Robotech-018-(2019)-(Digital)-(Mephisto-Empire)-006.jpg (2007x3047, 1.39M)

You mean Simon Furman the writer? I think he's leaving soon>\.

They changed a lot stuff so I can't say for sure. I know it's just before the events in Wedding Bells.

I honestly got no clue about Robotech as a whole. I just got into Macross recently via Plus.

I am afraid I don't think I do.
Still have to finish the original SDF eventually but that quality animation took its toll after about half of it

Attached: 1492634732428.webm (704x384, 2.85M)

They're rewriting a lot of it, but they're a little less than two thirds of the way through, IIRC.
Plus is a good intro. I wish Zero got more love, though. Them VF-0s.

Anyhow, yeah. Robotech had the Macross Saga, Southern Cross/The Masters Saga, and then The New Generation. And then... Nothing.

The books and comics went a little into the future, with a series called 'The Sentinels' tracking the adventures of Rick and Lisa in the SDF-3 as they got tied up with the home planets of the Robotech Masters and the Invid. It was even gonna get animated at one point, but that fell through. The Shadow Chronicles made all of that noncanon, though. The comics were... Not great. John and Jason Waltrip did the art for the vast majority and, well.

Let's just say that their artwork for Guilded Age and Dangerously Chloe are marked improvements.

Attached: robotech sentinels swimsuit spectacular 00fc.jpg (980x1523, 359K)

Zero was good stuff. I really enjoyed it even with the quasi magical bullshit. The CGI holds up well too.
And VF-0s are pretty good. Have one I drew a while ago.
>Robotech
It is interesting to hear at least. I do remember seeing some art ages ago that was just a few not so great looking VFs so this is not entirely surprising.

Attached: 1536177251005.png (1920x1080, 742K)

There's also the bit that a lot of Macross fans get offended over where Protoculture is a literal fuel source in Robotech that they use for all of their robotechnology, rather than the first sentient race in the universe.

That said, the Macross Saga of Robotech isn't a bad adaptation of Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Goes off the rails a bit towards the end, of course, since it's got to lead into Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospaeda, which are rather different. But for an 80s-era translation, it's a lot more faithful, and better, than a lot of anime shows ended up.

For example, look at what happened to Gatchaman.

Attached: 00 frontcover.jpg (1002x1539, 411K)

The Waltrips art was ok at first but why did all the women characters get breast implants?

Battle of the Planets, that had some good voice actors and music but damn you could really tell wonky edits.

'cause they were, like, twenty.

They haven't really improved that much in that regard, though.

Attached: dc waltrip.png (644x925, 357K)

Also got dubbed into G-Force and Eagle Riders. Shit was popular.

with good reason. Harmony Gold to Macross is essentially Bob Kane is to Batman.

Spoonfeed me some completed mecha manga I can relatively easily pirate (e.g. not Dog Style & Dog Life), I'm new to this

new scans/rips when?

30th anniv. looks good -- so far as the artwork, anyway. I saw the words "35 millimeter" at one point, so they've burned it direct from the film masters.

Attached: 4Chan 1323876302490.jpg (2000x2822, 1.01M)

Not like they invented crystal people.

Attached: 6e0485ee79e148ffc7eb19a71aa9.jpg (1524x2445, 2.62M)

Yeah, the 30th anniversary was back in 2012, so any version you find now is probably it.
Manga? There's a few different Gundam ones.

Gundam: The Origin, Char's Deleted Affair, Crossbones Gundam, Gundam Wing: Glory of the Losers, Cannon God Exaxxion, The Plot to Assassinate Gihren Zabi, Dominion Tank Police, the Getter Robo Saga (Getter Robo, Getter Robo G, Getter Robo Go, etc.), Mazinger Z, Full Metal Panic... A few others.

Why shouldn't they.

As someone who grew up on Battle of the Planets, I'm a lot more forgiving about localization than some younger fans.

Attached: 50ef58ec680e02985bea8ee416d0da.jpg (932x1459, 298K)

Oh, the localization could've been downright atrocious. They did a lot better than it could've been.

I still like the redub they did in the 2000s better, though.

I've watched plenty of B movies growing up so I don't mind bad acting that much.

Battle of the Planets had people like Alan Young and Keye Luke voicing lines.

Then you have dubs made from South Korean knockoff anime. Now those were pretty bad dubs.

That game was unironically the most stressful and anxiety-inducing game I've ever been a part of. Our GM was a master at making us sweat every engagement like we were scrubs, and he wasn't afraid to kill us like roaches if we couldn't get ourselves out of our messes. I'd go into detail but this isn't /cg/.

Nah, go into detail. There's enough of Yea Forums that're also fa/tg/uys.
