They established in part 1 that Gai tried to teach all his students to open the gates but none of them aside from Lee could handle it. Gai favoured Lee but he was easily one of the better teachers in the series and is shown to have tried to give them all equal attention initially.

There was never any potential for anything, because the entire series was just riding on the tailwind created by One Piece reviving the shonen genre in a big way. If the author inexplicably died some time after the chunin exam arc we could still pretend it was a good anime.

You can't even call them "arcs". I quit reading Naruto's manga after Madara showed up, but up to that point Hinata's character "arc" was a flat line and her only defining characteristics were being shy and being in love with Naruto because he was nice to her once, which is not a winning combination. You can't even really call that a personality. Which I guess is why braindead shipperfags liked her so much, makes it super easy to write fan fiction because you can insert any personality you want in all the social interactions not defined by being shy or being about Naruto and nothing in the manga will contradict you.

I shit on Hinata a lot but I can understand why some people liked her. It's admirable how she could see Naruto's positive qualities before literally anyone else; his drive, spunk. For a shy reserved person like Hinata, I can understand why she'd aspire to be just a little bit more like him.

Her role in the story though was ass and Hinatards over the years completely ruined the character for me.

There are some awesome moments in the show, fucking Lion 3 has one of the greatest scene I hace ever watched. Everything past season 2 goes downhill as the plots becomes boring and characters dull.
But again, people think the last season of samurai jack was good, when it's clearly shit after episode 4.

No, there's two main differences. The first is that narutards didn't originate on Yea Forums, they were attracted to the board by the presence of naruto threads like moths to flame. MLP's brony fandom started on Yea Forums and then spread outward from there.

Hinata's character was unironically done better with Yamato in relation to his relationship with Kakashi. Yamato admires Kakashi a lot and manages to revolve a lot around him and wants to be acknowledged by him without it being his whole personality like with Hinata.
