I agree, The animation looks way cheaper than the original, the backgrounds look flat and lacking, But those square heads and beaks are the worst.

The redesigns were ok, the problem was the writing.

Nicole went for shocked (circle eyes and small circular pupils) to happy (wide oval eyes and big oval pupils). Gumball was both shocked and excited (circle eyes and small circular pupils) and his pupils became even smallers when he got more excited

I can't really even explain why I like the pilot's designs. Everything is so gritty, yet outlandishly cartoonish at the same time.
It looked truly unique. Not "snowflake unique" but actually unique. And then they fucking changed it all, including the art style!

EEnE didn't really get redesigned. It just got cleaner lines and more vibrant coloring. I guess the expressions got more exaggerated like Ed's in the second picture but that still feels more like evolution of the show's cartooniness than a straight redesign.

The bright colors kind of ruin it for me.

The simpler design feels like it came out of a webcomic. I mean that in a good way, the simplicity of the designs let them be very expressive in exaggerated ways.

In Pikachu's case, I'm pretty sure it was just to make him easier to animate. Halfway through the first season he was already starting to look like the one on the right, except with these tiny arms that you could tell the animators had trouble with because of how limited their movement was.
