Honestly, I'd appreciate an explanation too. Everyone on Yea Forums shits on Sentry but everything I've seen of him looks pretty cool, and the concept of a well-intentioned but mentally unstable Superman is a fun one.
Is it just because he ripped that dude in half, and that was too edgy?
Because a god-level hero is essentially a permanent Deus Ex Machina, unless given a blatant weakness, which then has to be a part of every single story he is in, otherwise said hero needs to have plot induced amnesia so as not so solve any crisis in a matter of minutes. Just like every story involving Superman needs to have either kryptonite or other kryptonians in it, or else Superman is just a retarded version of himself.
Marvel has a horrible habit of creating cosmically powerful badasses who sit on the sidelines of any serious situation to maintain the drama for less capable characters.
I wouldn't even call out Sentry for this, the bullshit started for me with Phoenix.
>unless given a blatant weakness, which then has to be a part of every single story he is in The Sentry's blatant weakness is even more inescapable than Superman's. At least kryptonite could hypothetically be destroyed or sent away, leaving Superman nearly invulnerable. The Sentry can't escape the Void in the same way.
At the time we didn't know he'd eventually fuck off. He was an asspull and we thought he'd be around forever to help writers write their way out of corners.
he was made for a minisseries with a specific point to make (homage to all ages, evil superman). Outside of that he is too powerful for the kind of story Marvel tells.
i still dont understand, was he a drug addcit who self inserted into everyone's mind? where is he now?
Dominic Ross
Are you going to storytime any of the stuff that came after with the character? This miniseries seems pretty good, and I feel like it's not this version of the character people are annoyed with.
Joshua James
I can, sure
Andrew Watson
based storytimer, thanks a lot. Always nice to see some Sentry

Drug addict origin story is a cover up. He's an avatar of God.

How strong is Sentry actually? Can he defeat Phoenix? If so how? How does this guy stand up to Galactus or Vulcan or Beyonder or the Living Tribunal?

>"You're a fruit cake. That's it." Why does spiderman hate teh gays desu
Connor Brooks
this EU avengers team is quite lame in terms of design. But I am enjoying this comic overall. It's building suspense nicely even though I know what's going to happen.
Jaxon Collins
iirc he has the power of "1000 exploding suns" Not sure exactly how strong that is compared to Phoenix.
Thomas Richardson
I feel like Phoenix would be able to shatter his mind at will, Sentry's weakness is too great.
I don't understand-now Sentry is merged with Void and it is stronger than pure Sentry? So does that mean that Sentry no longer will schizo out with the void and murder everyone anymore?
Ryder Brooks
Except, you know, the author not using the Void for like two years.
Joshua Barnes
Questionable, they say 'x exploding suns', I've even seen him say 'million' so.... he's not strong enough to keep Hercules from hurling him into space and if he had that kind of strength, Herc couldn't do that.
Henry Walker
Phoenix destroyed a solar system and billions of lives and everyone forgave her. From what I know of the Sentry he got trapped in the sun and was burned to death over and over again.
If he can't even survive the sun how would he survive Phoenix Force Jean? Is he just Deus Ex Machina now? I never read marvel comics but I assume Sana Amanat and the editors have shit all over him.
That original miniseries is fantastic, desu it should have ended there.
Dominic Rodriguez
Sentry's strong enough to make Molecule Man his bitch so I actually don't see Phoenix being much of a challenge

Everything about him is unearned. He's retconned into the universe as some sort of ultimate force of pure good, making everything spin around him. He's an awkward retcon that reduces the role of every other hero in the marvel universe. He isn't even "good" like superman. He's a junkie that got his powers by drinking an experimental serum because that's just how retarded he is, it is never explained how he can go from that to someone everyone looks up to. And the whole thing with the void is so melodramatic, as a standalone the character itself is incredibly melodramatic and self pitying. Check out the Jenkins/Romita run to understand what I'm saying.

Having read the storytimes just now: The retcon really does cheapen the character, especially when you get to his funeral, and you hear all about the great things Sentry did, that we never saw, and continuity that he couldn't possibly have been a part of. Later, some authors seem to play with the idea that his presence warps timelines around him in-canon, but this is never confirmed, and it's only used in part of a story told by one character to another character, that is partly used to hypothesize ideas about Sentry. I don't really have much problem with Sentry being a positive force for the people in his life, and this coming from a former mentally ill junkie, because Sentry represents all his desire to do good and be a hero, and Void seems to represent all his hate and resentment. I think maybe the biggest mistake with the character was that in order to make him reusable, they had everybody get their memories of him back.
The original minieseries felt weird, and it felt like it was supposed to, because there's this creeping sense of dread surrounding what's happening, and though Robert is desperate for people to know who he is, this journey comes concurrently with destruction popping up around the globe by the Void, so something feels wrong, and it pays off with the reveal. It ends with everything going mostly back to normal in the MU, and we now know he's a part of it, but in the background. Having to restore people's relationships with him by bringing him back leads to a lot of attempts at pathos that don't quite land, because none of it seems real.

Bob is basically a reality warper - the drug he imbibed basically turned him into one. He was also a drug addict, so he developed an addiction to it.
If there is a character I'd compare the Sentry to, it'd be the Plutonian from Irredeemable. Both characters are Superman pastiches/allegories that were actually reality warpers. The difference is that Bob most likely had a troubled past but was then given the most powerful ability/weapon. The danger being that he was able to do the greatest evil (the Void) as much as the greatest good (The Sentry)

Trips of truth.
The Sentry was always meant to be a one-shot.
Angel Diaz
This. That one shot was fantastic in terms of both art and writing. The buildup of tension was great and all the different styles of comics worked really well and helped to make the story more tragic.
