drawing a self portrait is a good way to improve.

It's very hard to get a good likeness- usually it's easy to draw yourself much uglier or much better looking, or just not capture the "self" at all.

If you intend to draw at all, it's good to do.

i fucking hate learning how to use the tablet versus pen and paper. I also hate not have a scanner at my home. anyone got an tips to getting more comforatable with a tablet? I'm not much of an artist, this whole digital aspect is a major set back.

You can put a piece of paper over your tablet to make it feel more like drawing on physical paper, however it will wear down the tips of your stylus faster.
Just use it a lot and you'll get used to it quickly. Also make sure it's set up properly to your monitor.

Keep on drawing until you comfortable with it. At first year it feels like you are 5 years old again, but then suddenly your skill on tablet is the same as on paper.

Humble artists end up being the best because they can recognize all of their flaws and strive to improve.

For me it was really easy to use a tablet, but I have good hand eye coordination and I think that's what allowed me to transfer over so easily. You will learn it user, like all things, it's just something you put time into figuring out.

I use pretty shitty charcoal, some lighter greys I have to just pick powder up from darker areas with a smudger/q tip/cotton ball and just use what I've picked up in the area.

huge monkey paw because I work at an art school, theoretically I can steal some pretty hard-to-come-by stuff even if you're trying to purchase them. The problem is, it's district funded, so we go by mostly by donations from companies trying to get some tax-write off.
A few years ago, when I was still an intern there, we had both state and federal funding so it was the shit, constant boxes of high-gramature canson stuff, koh-i-noor pencils and my personal holy grail, loads upon loads of unipins. All of that is gone now and my fucking wacom desk is acting out and refuses to recognize the drivers I so lovingly installed for it.

Kind of unrelated but my girlfriend told me to post the shit I see in my nightmares here so I figured I might as well?

Demon on top is the most recent, wails with no mouth, cries, sits in the background of my dreams sometimes or is just present in my nightmares. Uses tentacles or is just missing arms depending on the dream.
Demon on the bottom is from a few years ago, was just a smug piece of shit that would stare me down and smile. I didn't see anything but his smile under his hood and recessed shadows where his eye sockets would be. Sometimes he pops up in my current nightmares just to unnerve me. I just feel like he's literally my ego or pride forced into some weird manifestation. Sometimes he has tentacles reaching out of his back, sometimes instead of a hoodie he's wearing cultist robes, but he's always basically the same and has the same uncomfortable malicious feeling surrounding him.

Eschews the linework, probably the least cartoony portrait in the thread, creates a lively impression (I can see where you'd object to this one, but I really dig the movement and composition, it's got a Rea Irvin thing going on.) pretty simple, with the simplicity we get some really playful texture and I dig the little things like the ear cutting into the hair. The texture does hide a bit of sloppiness in the proportion. I like the colors, The mess works with the vibe and character it wants to impress.

Probably some of the best of the thread, but in general the thread's not that bad as an average smattering of self portraiture.
