Cartman is a bigger edgelord than Rick Sanchez or Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, yet he gets a pass because "muh satire". The problem is that people think they understand his character and defend him by saying "You're missing the point, he's supposed to be an unlikable insufferable asshole". First off, "that's the point" is terrible justification for making a character that sucks the fun out of something. But more importantly, that's not actually Cartman's purpose. Cartman is meant to be the mouthpiece for Trey Parker's uglier, less socially acceptable opinions. Does anyone really think that Cartman killing all the hippies was Trey and Matt's way of criticizing people who hate hippies? No, Cartman is supposed to be the obnoxious loudmouth who speaks the truth. Of course, they blur the line by making him unambiguously wrong at times. It gives them a convenient excuse for when they get called out for being assholes, or for being completely wrong about something.
I agree entirely about him closing his eyes being the shark jumping moment. That marked when he stopped being a character and started becoming a set piece, and the others followed eventually, too. South Park started as a shoe with real personality and quirkiness to it. It had heart to it, and not in some pussy Captain Planet way. It had the kind of heart that a show gets when the creators are passionate about what they're creating. They made a town and characters that you grow attached to, at least a bit. Then they stopped caring about what they were creating and focused only on what they were saying. The show and everything in it just became a vehicle for them to mock whatever they happened to see in their social media feed.
