It might sound stupid, but the pressure to "keep doing what you've always done because its the only reason people follow you" can be really intense.

Oh, nah, I was never that famous, but I still just didn't enjoy the following I had.

I didn't back anything up, like a quarter of my stuff is on E621 I think, but overall I just stopped caring. I grew fairly bitter at my art because I had stopped experimenting or growing because I found myself drawing what my followers wanted instead of what I wanted. One of the big motivators is because I fell into the fanart/pinup trap and stopped focusing on things like my original work, or doing shit like studies or background practice so that I COULD do a comic.

Some artists don't have this problem and they just do whatever the hell they want. Some artists wipe everything because of drama, but for me personally I did it for the reasons mentioned above.

I don't really post online anywhere anymore, I've been trying to shore up the weaknesses in my art and focus more on improving what I want before I bother re-entering the rat race.

So, if I wanted to start a webcomic, intended to generate some amount of profit, that would actually have a decent lifetime, I'm going to have to be ready to go through artists like they are consumables?

If you're not the artist you should be prepared that some can become unstable sometimes, yes, but I mean its not like every artist does this. I was just giving my anecdotal evidence since I happened to see a post I could comment on while browsing this thread.

I did it because eventually it becomes embarrassing to look at your old art, no matter how good other people say it is. It's like walking around with reminders of embarrassing shit you did glued to you 24/7. Sometimes you just want to wipe it all and present a better image of yourself to others.

I take the opposite approach. I have all my art labelled with the date of creation as the name on my gallery so you can see me get better as time moves on. I find it very motivating to look back on old pics.

Well I already explained it in an earlier post. I don't care for the following I have and I want to detach for it. Its not a contradiction though. The issue I was having was I found myself consistently trying to please an audience that was pushing me in a direction I didn't like and by just wiping out my old alias and attached social media, I found it easier to concentrate on myself.
