This show was really fun up until the episode after the one where Boxman and Venemous go on that cruise. After that special it felt seriously unfocused and bizarrely directed. The gun episode, that stupid finale, and all the filler shit afterwards was too much. It could have been a big deal but they made it stupid, over-referential, and just confusing.

some episodes come off as a campy and non sequitur but-still-kinda-canon winkwink, some a nice focus on the villains for a change, and a few actual plot episodes.

There's having a world fully built and shown piecemeal throughout the series and then there's the empty promises bullshit copout where they simply tease "oh there's a lot more going on behind the scenes you'll just have to keep watching and waiting until we eventually pull something out of our ass" ie they only do it to make it seem like their work has depth to it.
