When does this take place in relation to the show? Not when it was published, but is it a prequel or a sequel.

Stand alone not related storywise/timeline wise.

It's the comic the show was based on. I don't think it's "canon" to it.

So the comics were released concurrently with the show, but you're probably right about any relation between the canons being inconsequential.

This isn't one of those comics dude, this is the original one-shot published by Dark Horse. It came out in 1990.
