Why hasn’t Big Mouth gained more popularity on this board? It’s one of my favorite shows at the moment, and it easily trumps Bojack and OITNB as my favorite Netflix show.
I get why people would be hesitant to give it a shot, between the strange subject matter and character designs that instantly make you think “hideous”, but the show is building a really interesting lore, the characters are great and play off each other well, and I don’t think it takes long to accept the designs. The animation is actually really high quality.
I don’t know, I’m loving this show. The valentines special was great and I can’t wait for season 3.

I was hesitant to give it a shot, mainly because of the ugly animation. But a friend made me sit down and watch it at his house and within two episodes, I was hooked. I think the show deserves to be talked about more.
Also the animation isn't nearly as ugly in motion as it is in still images.
It is ugly and kinda over-reliant on CRINGE humor, i still enjoyed it more to see where the show would go but it is pretty obvious why people decide to drop it or not even pick it up. But let's be honest, plenty people here probably watched at least the first episode just due the CONTROVERSY of it.

The thing about Big Mouth is that it's the kind of show that is difficult to engage. If you're put off from the outset, then it's already lost to you. You're never going to like it, or understand why certain people like it. But some people just really click with its humor and message, and when they do, they become instant fans. The thing is, most of those people are normies, and older viewers, especially parents in particular. They find it all very relatable. It appeals to them in a very particular way. It's a smart show, but it's very much not for everyone. If you hate it, you hate it. There's not much else to say.

The concept is half baked. Mulaney can only carry the show so hard before you realize that he probably hates working on the show.
The show itself is just a collection of misfit comedians exploring insecurities they still have from middle school under the guise of "raunchy sex ed". It replaces a riff track with pure sleaze: if someone says something or does something horrendously off base or disgusting, it's your cue to laugh.
I get it: our teens were fucking weird and we did weird shit when we were younger. That doesn't mean we didn't have fond, humanizing memories about okay things we did. That's where the show fails: it assumes that everyone was always having an awful time with puberty because the comedians had felt that way when they were young. In a sense, it has no chill. It's always pillow fucking or underage drinking or talking genitals. Both hormone monsters had potential to be insightful, and they squander it by making them both reprehensible. If their entire intent was to make a sex ed cartoon that helps to clear the air about sex, they missed the mark - they depict it as instinctual, visceral, and smelly, which is fine since it's all of those things, except they think "repulsive" belongs in the mix.
