Make her a boy, make her the smart one of the trio, possibly disabled somehow to play up the helplessness, but make it clear that she lookw up to Sora. Then make Riku a girl and the main rival AND love interest both. Combining those roles gives that character max potency and agency while reducing the importance of the third wheel.

Because let's face facts: The non-rival, in this case the Kairi, will always be a third wheel. So the trick is to make her someone that fades more seamlessly into the background when her existence isn't immediately necessary, but can pop up and have an occasional impact when it's convenient. You missed the point of my post. It wasn't the fact that he was edgy that made him good, it was because he actually developed into something else. He realized his flaws and overcame them. Whenever people bring up that they hope Sora goes through some drastic change all I can think is people really don't get Kingdom Hearts. It's like asking why Mickey won't angst and shit that ain't the point.

For starters, if you commit to her being a coma for the entire first game, at least give her more scenes where she reacts to other worlds. It seems like that stopped cold after the visit to Merlin's place.

Then, actually make there be some kind of resolution to her being a Princess of Heart and from Hollow Bastion. She has no meaningful interaction with the other princesses OR characters from Hollow Bastion.

She also needs a game where she's the protagonist and gets to do things, because otherwise she's just a goal for Sora to protect instead of her own character.

I know the phrase to said a lot, but I'd say Kairi's treatment in KH3 was 100% mean-spirited (Then again almost all of KH3's final act was mean-spirited). Don't know what the fuck is Nomura's problem with her.

We know as a Princess of Heart she gets BS pure light abilities.
In 1 she reverts Sora from a Heartless to a person without even needing his body, meaning he is just a walking heart.
In 3 she prevents him from going to actual death by holding his heart and body in purgatory, but it's off screen.
Just have kingdom hearts be summoned, the bad guy is about to annihilate Sora, then just have Kairi release all that pure light in her heart and have it fry the bad guy like Ansem at the end of KH1.

I remember that short sequence in KH2 where you had to defend Minnie Mouse while she made her way to the Timeless River spot or whatever to purify the room it was in. Or at least give her that as a skillset that came with becoming a Keyblade user, given how crazy and varied the skills Keyblade users have became. Someone who could act as a base to retreat to who can repel the enemy when things get too heated and you need some time to catch your breath. And that's just in terms of making her more interesting as a combatant.
