I give tentative respect, because I'm not a sociopath. You give respect, with the expectation that it will be given in turn. If you murder and/or rape you lose that tentative respect and earn derision. Only the paranoid would reserve respect out of fear that strangers are just potential rapists and murderers.

I think it's because "mainstream" society has changed so much from what many, otherwise normal, people expected, that there's a reaction against it which is leading to radicalization of people who would have been, in, say, the 80s or 90s, just normal conservatives.
