Freedom Fighters are trash from a design perspective. Look at Sonic himself: the design is timeless. Despite Sega's constant attempts at rebooting him, the original design is still the most popular. That's because he was designed on Mickey Mouse principles: limited color scheme, uniquely recognizable accessories, and an outline iconic enough that you can easily recognize him in.

Now take a look at the Freedom Fighters. They're 90s as fuck. It hasn't even been 30 years and their designs already look dated. Sally's hair looks ridiculous. Early Rotor looks like a cereal mascot, and modern Rotor looks like Rob Liefield's fursona. Bunny looks chunky in the cartoons because her design doesn't streamline well. Antoine might be the best designed of the lot, and that's because he's supposed to look like a smarmy idiot.

I like the characters but you're right about their appearance, they're Western 90's saturday-morning-cartoon designs paired up with a Western take on a Japanese 1940's-cartoon-inspired design. If Sonic was designed as a saturday-morning design from the ground up, or the FF were redesigned by Oshima or another Sonic Team artist from the ground-up, the dissonance wouldn't be as jarring. Even the post-reboot redesigns, trying to have their cake and eat it too, don't work as well as Tails or Knuckles or (potentially) Rouge and Shadow.

Forces was supposed to be the safest option for commercial/critical success but it still got panned because of lackluster development

I always thought Blaze was a good compromise between classic and modern character design sensibilities.

The artstyle Sonic is based on is a Japanese Take on Disney Style characters , aka Donald duck etc.

But that's what I mean. The same design sensibilities informed Japanese and Western cartoons but they went down different routes in stylistic evolution, so a Western take on 'old Western cartoon' is quite different from a Japanese take on 'old Western cartoon' and the two don't mesh together without careful consideration. And given DiC's pitch for this particular series of Sonic, that consideration wasn't there. Frankly it'd be interesting to see some artists take a crack at proper 'classic Freedom Fighter' designs from the ground up.

Unleashed also was a reaction to the "No one likes Sonic's Friends" stuff which started being spread around after Sonic 06. It's why they've never been playable again in the 3d games outside of the Shadow DLC for Forces.

This is the last time you will ever see majority of these characters that Capcom and Sega own.

I think Sega and IDW to collaborate with DC and bring us a Batman and Sonic crossover. What would really be interesting about this idea is Sonic meeting face-t-face with the Joker. This all may sound outlandish, but I see massive potential here.

Zavok is a shitty Sonic character but has a decent design that stands out better than any other character made in the last 15 years. He'd work much better in his own spin-off, but since clearly Sonic is the main focus of the series forever and ever, they'll never turn him into a decent character rather than a Bowser expy.
