DC spent far more money to sell far less books, not even of just superman. I've seen a couple people get turned off of the DC label because of this.

I don't really see it. After the initial Rebirth blitz even Tomasi's book went into a pretty steep decline in sales to about the same point Superman was at near the end of New 52 era. Bendis "fans" failing to follow him has probably annoyed DC. But he hasn't exactly kicked Superman out of the top 100 with anything he's done yet.
