Ehh this movie was only alright.
The visuals were par for the course, which is to say amazing.
The story only serviceable. We knew a long time ago this was going to be "the one where the dragons leave." And it did an alright job of exploring the themes of love and loss and for a leader to shoulder the responsibility of his people yadda yadda
The separation scene at the end was done really well. You could it was the one scene in the movie they really wanted to sell and they did.
It's too bad they needless shot themselves in the foot four minutes later
The villain doesn't add anything to the story, he doesn't build on the themes or play foil to Hiccup or Toothless.
I don't think the side characters really contributed anything this whole movie, it's like they all read the script beforehand or knew the ending was a foregone conclusion.

Jesus. Hiccup's life may have started hard, but he got it pretty good in some aspects. Would have probably been as good as it gets if Toothless had stuck around.

I think he means that they went out of their way to make an 'impactful' ending, and then went back on it immediately. If the separation didn't have to be permanent you'd think they'd visit more then once every decade. Its kinda one way or the other without a point like "they'll find the hidden world if we go there so often", but without that point there was no real need for the separation other then plot.

They shouldn't have made it a first time in ten years, it would have been perfect if it was the first time with a beard and with children to justify Toothless' reaction, but it would make sense for Hiccup to come once in a while for maintenance and upgraging the tail as Toothless doesn't have a full range of movement

Y'know I would have watched a whole movie of Hiccup and Toothless exploring the world and fucking around like they were doing at the start of 2. The biggest thing 3 missed was a Hiccup and Toothless scene with just them together.

Given the repetitive narration I imagine it would work great as an exploration video game where you would fight dragon hunters and free trapped dragons, but it would be super ambitious even for a non-movie based game so one can only dream.
I would love an canon book filling the gaps though, but it might clash with the existing ones
