BATMAN: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

In this original graphic novel, Batman meets his foe The Mad Hatter for the very first time -- landing The Dark Knight in a Wonderland he could never have imagined, hot on the heels of a white rabbit. But is this strange place real or a hallucination? Robin and Alfred believe he's deep in delirium -- but if that's the case, how does he manage to resolve several mysteries that have plagued Gotham City for decades...

This fantastic tale is spun by renowned comics writer Bruce Jones (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) with surreal art by Sam Kieth (THE MAXX, BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM -- MADNESS, LOBO).

Thanks for posting, OP

I've read several of Kieth's other Batman minis (Secrets, Ghosts, Madness, the current Maxx crossover) and they all read like this. Very stream of consciousness "making it up as he goes along" sort of thing. He has a base concept in his head, but you can tell he's one of those artists who abhors scripts. I think that's why The Maxx is still his best work, because he had Bill Messner-Loebs adapting his plots into proper scripts for him to draw so the stories were more structured and better paced. When Messner-Loebs left the book after #20 and Kieth took over writing, that's when The Maxx started to fall apart.

>But Mad Hatter was in Long Halloween and Dark Victory

Assembling those "early years" stories from various Post-Crisis minis, one-shots, OGNs and arcs from Legends of the Dark Knight is fun, but stuff like this is always a little annoying.

I think he should patent his tech then sell to other companies then build an Alice in Wonderland amusement park. He could literally have all the Alice's he wanted.

like most of the batman smart villians, there was a point in their life where their technology wasnt there yet, and funding got cut, so they turned to something illegal rather than stop research. his tech NOW is capable of an amusement part, but to patent and work on it, he'd have to pay for his previous crimes

Aww nice I always meant to read this.

this art reminds me of The Maxx

or may be it's all the alice-in-wonderland story over the very fairy-tale-like art?

or it could be the big bat nose and the flowing black cape, and the ridiculous but perpective-changing antennae, i mean, bat-ears ...

this is really good

and here's the hatter holding the hookah like a bagpipe

or it could be that the arts done by the guy who did the maxx

wow, and look at that switch

“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” “How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice. “You must be,” said the Cat, or you wouldn’t have come here.”
