I keep telling this to people and they never believe me. They insist that Family Guy was always screaming and pop culture references but the first few seasons are an entirely different show. I'd say that early FG is a Simpsons knock-off, which I don't mean as an insult. It's the same sort of formula and situational, absurdist humor but with enough of its own "small-town New England" atmosphere to give it its own distinct flavor. I still chuckle sometimes when I think of that Benjamin Disraeli joke (which was incidentally a meta joke about the overly esoteric references the show would make).

That's the biggest change. The original FG episodes had a lot more heart, where there were actual plots and characters to engage the audience (a la the good seasons of The Simpsons). Like, there was still lots of absurd situations and jokes, but you still got a sense of who these characters were and were invested in their struggles. There's so little effort on display in the newer seasons where you can tell the writers don't give a shit about making any of this believable or engaging. They just want to cram in as many swear words and cheap pop culture references so they have an early lunch break.

The show is really inconsistent and they sometimes try to give Quagmire some moral ground but it really doesn't work when they established them to be a character with no morals or limits and constantly make jokes about that fact. Like I know it's a lot to expect Family Guy of all shows to have decent writing but they don't even keep their characters consistent.

Honestly they should have just had either Meg or Chris do it but I think Seth wouldn't take it well unless he was roasting "himself"

What was crucial to early Family Guy was that all four of the friends were fairly average, upstanding citizens. Cleveland pokes his head in and says "Aw, that's nasty.", because "LOL REMEMBER WHEN THAT JOKE WAS RELEVANT? XD". Also, he's getting raped by Quagmire right outside the Griffins' house. Then Baby Susie walks on screen, waves her hands, and says "That's all, folks!"

The next 40 minutes are just the writers giving up: videos of them shitting on each other, having a huge orgy while covered in shit, footage of people getting shot in the head, footage of babies being skinned alive, etc. You name it, they have it all. The final 10 minutes are just Seth MacFarlane high as balls on every drug imaginable, crooning into the camera about how much he hates his life before pulling out a shotgun and blowing his fucking brains out all over the wall.

It'll end up being so viewed and talked about, that it renews FG for another 10 seasons.

That's sad, because The Cleveland Show's debut is exactly when I started disliking Family Guy. Think what you want about Cleveland's show, but when I first watched the two side-by-side it became VERY apparent that the FG had lost some of its key writers. Cleveland got all the stupid humor while FG was left with all the shock value non-humor. I always thought Cleveland coming back to the show would help bring back some of the charm from earlier seasons.

Then later when he started watching it when it was re-airing on adult swim he got really into it and now has the theme song as his ringtone.

I blame the gag where stewie beat the shit out of brian for money he was owed for the show's devent into pointless gore. That particular gag was funny because it was so shocking and unexpected. The show was rarely that violent and it came out of nowhere. The shockingness of it was what was funny.

But the writers instead figured it was the violence itself which was funny. So the show got more and more violent and gory. But the element of surprise was gone, so so was the humor. It was just expected and comedy is about the unexpected

I feel like that's an issue with multiple animated comedy shows. Family Guy, Simpsons, South Park. They've all become really cynical , none of them have any real heart or kindness in them anymore. And any time they try to have some humanity, it tends to fall flat because the rest of the show is so heartless.
