I thought they were doing fine, even the shippy episode in the prison thingy.
The only real complaint i had was the lack of a real epic fight against aku and the general rushedness of the ending.

IMO the first three episodes are better than the rest of the season, but the "everything after was shit" thing seems like hyperbole. I enjoyed what came after even if it wasn't AS good, the only episode I actually dislike was the finale itself.
