Why did Disney ruin him?

Legit question, memes & conspiracy's aside; has anyone (actor, director, producer etc) gone on record with why they did the gender-flip? Like in an interview or something?
Best I can tell it was simply to throw semi-casuals off the scent. IIRC nobody actually SAYS Yon-Rogg's name 'til after the reveal, and not everyone checks fkn toy leaks. Anyone who's heard of Marv and sees the movie would assume it's Jude Law.

Like you're right in the broadstrokes and they were 200% correct to skip over him but he had a few rather notable stories (the first Thanos saga, the Kree-Skrull War, a3rdexampleihad&forgotohno) and they're lit AF reads. I just noticed but Carol doesn't even call herself Captain Marvel in the movie, hell that plus having Mar-Vell (whom Fury refers to as Marvel) just caused some confusion with people who sat in front of me in the theater.

As a CarolFag, do you remember the issue where she was told, in a very award moment, that Mar-Vell died? I found it rather interesting to find out that she, of all people, was not there at his death bed. When I heard there was a issue to address this I've been trying to find info with no results.

The character was literally Mar-Vell in name only. The only similarity is that they were both Kree posing as a Lawson. And I guess they were both traitors, but they flipped the order of those events in the movie. Anyway Mar-Vell was never a scientist and even after he was branded a traitor he couldn't give a fuck about ending the Kree/Skrull war, partially because the Skrulls in the comics are bastards as much as the Kree, while in the movie they did nothing wrong.

But I know you're our resident rainbow manlet Carolfag, so you're going to eat this shit up and defend it no matter what because you only care about Marv as an accessory to Carol.
