Is he lost in the void of the indie comix scene? I have trouble finding anything aside from sold-out small prints.
I'm not much of a comic guy (not out of distaste. I simply have trouble finding titles that interest me), but his work I could read and laugh aloud like no other. I'd lend 'Amsterdam' to random work buddies and hear their laughter from across the hall.
Also, alt-comics/hipster shit general. I've tried a few chapbooks from Space Face and they were mostly neurotic diaries masquerading as punk or something. I miss Lauren Monger.
Yes, he's been fairly prolific with his zines the and has a brand new hardcover coming out soon as well as more zines. Follow him on social media for updates.
Op here, I actually emailed her a few times back when I was taking some professional preparedness class in college. She's really kind. Last I heard from her there was a hasty moving situation after a natural disaster, but I dunno.
>An actual comics thread on Yea Forums Bless you OP

I haven't been on this board in a year and it's weird. I used to get really good recommendations for Euro-comics here, like Metabarons and Lemur. Is everyone too busy arguing over DC stock prices or something?
No, just Captain Marble threads up the wazoo. I fucking hate all these movies.

Speaking of weirdo indie comics about losers, Whatever happened to Terrible Terrible Terrible.

Oh I'm an idiot with no reading skills. People are already talking about it...

I basically go out once a year to watch movies, usually, and that was spent already. Speaking of movies, I kinda worry that comics will go the same way literature did after the dawn of tv/film/the complete oversaturation of churned out content: only a means to an end for film adaptation. That's on top of comics being really perfectionist, time-intensive, and not being taken seriously for the longest time.
Lauren Monger, we were just talking about her, my dude. I check her pages every once and a while and nothing. I wish her well.
Don't worry 'bout it. I really wish Space Face press would reprint 'Sleepwalking.' I know there's probably some legal shit behind the print runs, either that, or those small presses love scarcity. I seriously waited two years for a reprint before giving up and just reading scans. I'm sorry, Lauren.
Are there any cool indie comics out there right now?
I think it was because her characters were the same kind of suburban alternativo losers, but they were less repulsive than Hanselmann's characters.
Nathaniel Rivera
I used to argue with friends about that for a while. Simon's characters sort of have that fishbowl effect, where they seem distanced from 'real people' and are moreso meant to be observed as satirical properties or hyperbolic projections of the author (maybe?). Meanwhile, Lauren's work is much more down to earth (aside from the demon summoning magical-realism stuff). The characters are much less dramatic outright (even in their lack-of facial expressions), allowing the reader to look into the subtext of their feelings. Of course, if a reader doesn't connect with these characters at all it comes off as banal. I distinctly remember an autism counselor (not even kidding) over the VICE comments shit-talking every page of Habits/Terrible for just this reason.

I remember my appreciation for Hanselmann's work declined considerably when I realized (or perceived that I realized) that he wanted me to be sympathetic to the characters in his comic.
I think it was when he tried painting the "jocks" and fratboys in the comics as the real villains of the setting that I just rolled my eyes. Like, "Your main characters are scum, dude. Don't try and make me feel sorry for them."
I liked them better when I just thought of them the way I think of Aqua Teen Hunger Force characters; terrible people whose suffering is there to amuse you.
Lauren's characters I probably wouldn't want to spend too much time with in real life, but I could at least empathize with them.
Only like... 20% of the content is fun, the rest is burnout drivel.

Well put. I may have had that problem with 'One More Year'. I used to like the comic where WW Jones had a spider crawl out of his asshole as a surreal visual gag in an otherwise unrelated story. I liked the initial premise of MMO because it's like a bogan post-slacker comedy: the 'charming' twenty-something aimless cast is now in their thirties and burnt out like shit, forced to sink deeper into bad life decisions, with dick jokes.
I can't really say what the sociopolitical culture is like in Wallaby-land so I can't say much on how the fratboys act there.
in the meantime, maybe check out Alex Graham's comics, similar stuff but with more clowns and aliens, also it's Simon recommended, I think Angloid was pretty neat
