Parker. Serious vs depressed. At the top of his game vs at his lowest. Tech-savy and well supplied vs poor.
>Spaidaman. More of comic relief character, Spaidaman speaks in Japanese with English subtitles which appear on screen, which only Spider-ham notices/interacts with. Peni serves as his interpreter translating his hammy dialogue and weird backstory into something more digestible for the rest of the cast and audience.
>Spider-punk. Possibly a dual protagonist alonside Miles, Hobart serves as a foil for Miles in terms of both personality and design. Both of them are fairly young but while Miles needed a mentor figure to bring him out of his shell, Hobart's conflicts with authority in his own world lead him to buck anyone who tries to give him orders regardless of whether its for his own good. In addition, while Miles' motif was inspired by hip-hop, Hobart's was inspired by punk rock.
Minor character tier
>Spiderman 2099. The Bladerunner of Spidermen and the edgy cyber-punk teenager.
>House of M Spiderman. Less the character from the event and more the characterization, House of M Spiderman is basically the opposite of Peter B. Parker as he got everything he wanted from the start and is a celebrity (maybe with his own reality TV show like the Kardashians) but is ultimately unfulfilled.
>Spiderman-UK. The Doctor Who of Spidermen because he actually has experience with dimension hopping.

>60's Spiderman. Meme-character. Literally just hiding behind a desk or pointing at the cast.

It's the context that does it. Miles does his thing well enough but it's nothing I haven't seen before.

What other theatrically released legacy movies have you watched? The only one I can think of, which is a technicality, is Ant-man and spider-verse blows that out the water.

I think there's some confusion here. I liked this movie a lot, and I liked Miles. I just didn't find him super interesting. The film doesn't work without him but I was always more interested in seeing his companions than him.

He's a perfectly competent execution of the aimless teen finding a purpose in his life and that's it.

I think Superior Spider-Man would be a good third act antagonist. The spider team beats the villain, and Otto goes too far as he always does.

This. People talk about Miles being black and bland, and they forget that he's been bland for eight years because he comes from one of the blandest decades in modern history, where the highlight was that Trump won as U.S. president. That sort of thing leaves a print on a character. Miles can't have Peter's legacy because he has his own, which means if you want him to build one that's worthwhile you've got to start by making the world a better place to emulate.
And that means stopping Disney, whatever it takes.

Miles plays an important but thankless role in this film. He's never going to be anyone's favorite because he's the foil for all the more interesting weird shit going on around him but you can't have the movie without him. In this film he shares the straightman role somewhat with Gwen since you also needed a competent straightman and Miles was just a trainee and that's why Gwen is the second least interesting despite her potential.

He is the least interesting of the main group as a concept, but he's more complex as a character than all but Peter B. Parker and is 100% necessary. Those are my feelings on Miles. I doubt that'll change much in the next film, and that's not a bad thing.

Honestly it's just as likely the sequel will be a Gwen movie. They've laid the ground work with Miles but Gwen's comics aren't that good either and also need a fix-up. With the tripod of Peter B (fixed 616 Peter), Miles (fixed Miles) and Gwen (fixed Gwen) you have more stability than just fixing two and leaving Gwen as an "eh".

If Gwen was the main character I have confidence they could build her into something more interesting. I enjoyed what there was of her here.

The point is she's a Spider-girl whose father is a cop that wants to kill her because she is considered responsible for killing her best friend who turned into a lizard monster because he knew she was Spider-girl and wanted to be special like her.
It's basically the alternate universe where Peter became the school shooter he would've become if he hadn't gotten spider powers and instead a girl named Gwen picked up the slack. However since this Gwen isn't even from the late 1960's she has none of Gwen's "perfect Stan Lee wife" personality, which like it or not is exactly who Gwen is.
Overall it's not a very good comic in execution.
And in case your foggy memory doesn't remember, 616 Peter didn't even know Gwen until he met her in college. He's never met a Gwen in high school.

MJ is different because they only recently divorced in Peter B's world, and he's awestruck seeing his recently-divorced wife again in the prime of her life in all her mid-20s perfection.

Seems like the verdict in Japan regarding Peni is that they think she’s cute and they love her, with exception of sakuga nerds who have complained (justifiably) that Peni looks kind of 90s and that her super low frame rate looked sort of weird. Parker is 616 Peter as seen from Spider-Verse by Sony (therefore Raimi) taking place long, long after when OMD would have happened (he's 44), but didn't because the probability amplitude of that is catastrophically low, and also Spencer never came in to replace Slott, because that's also a miracle.
He's comics Spider-man as Spider-man will end up in 50 years in a world without Joe Quesada but with the prevailing "let's keep him from growing up" attitude of modern comics.

Blonde Peter is only superficially like Ben. He is an adaptation of Ultimate Peter but instead modified to be a flawless perfect hero type. Like a character hitting the ground energy level in terms of complexity.

This Miles is Ultimate Miles, but done by writers that aren't Bendis. Pretty much anyone committed could've done a million things with Miles and Bendis did nothing. This doesn't mean that Bendis' Miles is the one true Miles and Spider-Verse Miles isn't, it means that the people who made this film are good and Bendis is shit.

None of this makes them different characters. There's not going to be another 616 Peter showing up, or another and another, ad infinitum. They are literally meant to be those characters from the comics. This is an adaptation. Like any cartoon, or film, based on comics.

The only characters from the same time period were the main three and even then Peter B came from a dimension where Peter Parker was born a generation earlier than in Gwen's universe. Noire was from 1933 and Peni is from the 31st century.

Instead of a sequel focus on adapting other stories in this aesthetic. It's a fucking *great* visual style for adapting comic book inspired stories, but I would hate to see it limited to just Spider-Verse sequels. Picture something like Gwenpool or Ms Marvel in this style.

Peter's death wasn't the catalyst that caused her to become a hero. It was the catalyst for her shutting out other people. The conversation in Miles' room wasn't about catalyst that caused each spider to be a hero, it was about the job of being spider-man inevitably leading to pain and loss.

Gwen's the most boring character in the movie now. Maybe if she expressed some baggage in some way, in ANY way, besides just saying she has baggage in her intro, that would not be the case. Or I've just been a fan of the series for longer than the running time of the movie and want at least some acknowledgement of the pairs history. With the caveat that I'm still not sold on a Miles and Gwen romance: It actually doesn't. Peter never really "got" Gwen. She was taken from him. So even if the nature of the relationship wasn't at all different, it does differentiate them. Now I can tell you really, really like Peter and Gwen together so you probably see that as some sort of insult to the memory of the relationship, but it is what it is.

I prefer MJ and Pete together funnily enough but I just think that turning her from being this important character in the history of comics to just another super hero pairing is a disservice to her Peter and Miles. Miles should get some sort of connection to his own world to build himself as a character but I don't think anyone actually wants that cause this is easier and requires less people getting paid for rights since both of her creators are dead.

An 8 out of 10 is so much better than anything we've gotten out of this IP in years and far more than anyone expected. It's a very solid start and I think it has great potential.
