T'challa was a character who had a personality. He had strengths, but he also had flaws that were exploited throughout the films. Flaws that allowed him to grow as a character. Flaws that allowed the audience to relate to him, despite the fact that he was some kind of African super king.
Carol comes off like a spoiled, arrogant brat the entire film and has virtually no personal growth throughout. The kind of character that, if they were a real person, wouldn't be tolerated in the majority of social circles. The only thing more unlikable in that movie than Carol's bitchy arrogant nature was the loathsome woman playing her.
Plus, the plot of Captain Marvel was just dull. It was boring and dull.
Black Panther at least ripped half it's plot from an already beloved movie that ripped half of IT'S plot from a beloved play.

The difference is, Christopher Priest recognized that as T'Challa's flaw decades ago and structured his plots to work with T'Challa as the center of the story but not necessarily the focus. Other writers have followed suit by making Black Panther as much about Wakanda as about T'Challa himself.
