The end of the movie heavily implies that he purposely let the legends about the eye flow for furthering his image of a badass, so even if the flerken cat is pure cancer and I hope everyone involved in it dies today, I actually like the idea that Fury eventually started bullshitting on purpose about the eye, it would fit Ultimate Fury well

they could have just not put anything about his eye in the movie

they essentially used the same joke as hot tub time machine about the guy losing his arm

That doesn't work if the audience knows. Fury should be bullshiting his way into fooling the audience, not fictional characters in situations we probably will never see.
