Liefeld's 90s art is bombastically fun and even though there are many fair criticisms of it stylistically, when most people say they hate Liefeld, they're more talking about the effect of superstar artists in the 90s dominating the industry, oftentimes at the expense of storytelling.

>they're more talking about the effect of superstar artists in the 90s dominating the industry
Which is kinda dumb since not only do they have no control over their popularity, they actually did a lot to support other artists by unchaining themselves from the Big 2 and starting their own business focused on better deals for independent creators.

It's really dumb when you look at some of the people criticizing the Image guys in the 90's. Nearly all of them company men. Two of the biggest were Peter David and John Byrne

David was snarky and said it was easier for artists to " pretend" to be writers than the other way around. Meanwhile he wasn't even a writer when he started at Marvel, he worked in sales and got to do Incredible Hulk because no one at the company wanted the job. But suddenly Todd McFarlane wants to write Spider-man and it's a problem to him

Gen X'er here, loved Liefield's Marvel stuff during the 90s. Those that lambastes his art for disproportionate anatomy miss the fact that's his unique style and artistic impression. No one says Picasso's heads are not correct or Monet is too blurry. Separately, I also think that comics back then were far superior to today's partly due to humans actually coloring the panel vs. the mechanical computer art that festers books today.

Yeah, rob's a self taught guy, like TONS of artists from the 80s and 90s. No one complains about more" indie" guys like Mignola, Eastman and Laird and etc for having weird cartoony anatomy.

But who was the better writer? Do people actually remember Todd's spider stories?

Internet wrestling community rule of complaining: it sucks when they choose other guys instead of my guy.

Perhaps its because those guys are good and Liefield sucks?

>Debate me
No need to. Liefeld's art is objectively better than 75% of what's on the market today. Dare I say, 79%, but that's pushing it a bit.

DC hasn't done as badly, but Marvel have employed some of the worst artists they've ever had this decade, cartoon art has embraced an ugly style, and an understanding of proper anatomy hasn't mattered in superhero comics in decades, but Liefeld still gets attacked like he's the only one doing that. People are just offended by his existence and a lot of them probably weren't even born when he was popular. It's just a self-perpetuating meme by now.

I like robs earlier 90s work. These days his art is just too clean and boring. It doesnt meld right. Feels like there is no motion or action to it.

The fact that people share this opinion gives me hope.
You're alright sometimes Yea Forums.

How the fuck do you want people debating what you like. Do you want people to argue to you that you actually don't like it?

Say what you will but the man drew a mean wolverine. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to pick at but he has some really great stuff

I feel like it's just him "caving in" to modern comic demands, like digital coloring and more decompressed layouts and such.

Alot of the reason rob gets shit on is cause of how many times he got caught tracing, every book he created is a avengers/xmen rip off and how he acted at image. That being siad his early 90s work was nice and very stylistic. There's no denying the impact he has had on comics. Lets face it, if their was no rob liefeld comics would be very different. Probably be a lot less creator owned characters, less independent titles, and marvel and dc would still be ripping off their artists.

Digital coloring is something he likes though.

Maybe he does, but his art looks way better to me in 90s colouring.

there's a way to get this 90's but in a more modern look
we just haven't found out how
maybe the new MK games kinda

its was awesome and exciting until around youngblood issue 6 then it went down hill.

>Alot of the reason rob gets shit on is cause of how many times he got caught tracing,

If you like the artist, they're doing a homage, if you don't like them, they're tracing or swiping. If they keep re-using the same photo-referenced faces and poses, they're Greg Land.

Malin
>disregard the politics, the man's art brings back Liefeels

Not sure if it's the coloring, the inking, or something else, but his 1990s work does look better than the 2000s and 2010s. This pic does show he can laugh at himself and have fun with his work, though.

This.

The 1990s:
> Geoff Senior quit comics.
> Liefeld entered comics.

This is the worst timeline.

Liefeld's first published work was in the 1980s, user.

FPBP

It's kind of fun in hindsight and art is subjective so there's nothing wrong with liking it, but the big problem was that EVERYONE was trying to be like Liefeld and co.

The point was he was trying to say who " real writers " were when he was just a guy with an office job that got a comic no one wanted

and his writing does not hold up

Liefeld's art WAS great in the 90's but somewhere along the Extreme to Maximum back to Marvel road the dude stopped improving and actually regressed. At this point I think he's actually forgotten how to draw like he once did. It's actually pretty common, JRJR, Byrne, Giffen, Miller, Ordway all abstracted or got sketchy to the point that quality noticably degraded.

It's the inking. He's usually inking himself and he's a terrible inker. It's way too scratchy.

This may have been the last time his work was evolving forwards.

I love weird 90's Giffen.

JRJR I believe is because of a wrist injury, if you see a video of him drawing he never moves his wrist and it's all forearm movement.

He can't do feet

Ehh kinda agree. I don't necessarily love his art but it is unique and it suffers a lot with digital coloring. Back in the early 90s it was passable. I have respect for him for getting in the industry so young and managing to do as much work both writing and illustrating at that age even if it was of spotty quality most of the time.

I love Liefeld. His art is so dynamic and interesting. Fuck anyone who cares about pussy shit like anatomy more than sheer passion.

please stop liking it
I like finding my comfy Liefeld books in 50 cent boxes.

Nah I get it. I grew up seeing Rob and all the artists that followed his style in comic shops in the 90s and it was cool as fuck. I still get nostalgic looking at his designs. It's easy to criticize it now but back then it really was the coolest shit.

I have that Omni. I dig it. Fuck the haters.

Yea Forums you’re okay.

I've fapped to it, so there's that.

agree 100%

it has more personality than most of the Image founders

He is certainly more interesting than other Jim.
