see, when I saw it at first I thought it was dumb until I saw more of it. its got its own charm. it not pandering in any way and it doesnt feel like all those other shows that try too hard to make dialogue. feels like they have fun with it.

My only beef first was making Raph the leader, because I had the impression the writers were Raph fags and tried to shill him over Leo, but my fears got smashed seeing how this is probably the sweetest depiction of Raphael and had no fan favorite tendencies at all.

Did I say anything about canon? Obviously the show is entitled to set its own character interplay, but the problem is that that joke is mostly effective because almost all the audience has a perfectly internalized notion of the characters' signature colors being a cornerstone of the franchise (it's almost self aware, and the kind of joke you wouldn't try just a couple episodes into an original show). At the same time, that same target audience of the joke will wonder how the -also perfectly internalized- idea of Splinter naming the turtles after his favorite artists and lovingly raising them on his own fit together with that. The detached-nickname gag is a pretty basic bit that works with your generic jerkass dad archetype best; this Splinter is obviously leaning towards that, but that's such a rupture with what the audience "knows" by default that it would warrant some acknowledgment at least.

I know I'm overthinking it, but it's just an example of many and it all comes down to the same thing: the show's writers are obviously proud of shaking things up while at the same time complacently keeping a foot back on a lot of franchise defaults since it's cheap and easy: they want to have their cake and eat it too. I should clarify: this doesn't offend me on its own or anything. But it's a pretty obvious tell of the general lack of effort put on the writing. You would think that the basic discipline to write their show as if the audience didn't know anything about would be a requirement to handle a huge franchise that's been running for 30 years.

Since the turtles are terrible at fighting they are setting things up as some sort of a prequel though, so if we were talking about competent writers I'd say they would be cycling through the turtles as leaders until a -much more developed- Leonardo ultimately takes the helm. Nothing in the show suggests any sort of long-term plan or attempt at continuity though, but one can dream.

says you. of you havent notice the turtles and splinter have different form of relationship than before. splinter fears donny reprisals and if anything loves his kids very much but doesnt have to be uptight about it. This splinter is more like that goofy kungfu master no one tales seriously until he starts kicking ass. none the less the jokes by going by their colors is still funny and I am sure most audience members wont even care.
next if the writing was so lazy it wouldnt ne getting the attention and praise from anons more and more. It isnt lazy infact it's the opposite, it relies on a good mixture of refrences of old and still doing completly new things. It makes villians less like evil dark or bumbling fools, to villians who can be feared but are goofy in their own right. take goat man, when looking at raph and his creations you get that moment of "ok he isnt just the main villain he has a personality." this is something that most of the previous versions couldnt do. they could not give a personality besides "I am bad guy"
There is nothing lazy about the writing especially when they do their own thing and still make it work.

they arent terrible at fighting, just look at the fish market episode. this isnt a prequel but it's own thing for sure.

I fucking love this cast. I think it's interesting that Leo isn't (currently) the leader, and generally the spotlight goes to Donnie and then Raph. April (Casey) is great. She kinda feels like another sibling, which I like more than when she was sort of the straight man of the group back in the 2003 version. I have not seen the 2012 cartoon.

I expected BullHop to become a villain at the end so that status quo remains, but they didn’t do that, and as such they made a fun character.

I think that the crew themselves are figuring out what to do with her. I don’t think they are super happy with her so far, and they’re working on making her better (the reporter line comes to mind)
