Light spoilers for Captain Marvel. But is anyone else pissed about Marv'ell in the movie? i couldn't fucking believe how retarded his portrayal in the movie was...
Is anyone else pissed about Marv'ell
I can't believe people pretend to care about a character whose only interesting thing was dying.
I saw some user days ago talking about how he was important to the cosmic side of Marvel, is this true?
No
>Is anyone else pissed about Marv'ell
No, and I highly doubt you really give a shit about a literal who that has been dead for longer then you've most likely been alive.
This is all just fake outrage
>No, and I highly doubt you really give a shit about a literal who that has been dead for longer then you've most likely been alive.
No OP, but...I did read Mar-vell's volumes. They were great. Much better than Carol in the role.
He also has not one, but two iconic stories (Requiem and that Secret Invasion mini who was actually great in spite of everything).
As for the change, eh. I knew they would find a way to completely neuter anything that could steal Carol's thunder, she is getting the Roman Reigns push, so Monica gets written off as her little buddy and Mar-vell is just some old woman that acts as her mentor.
Whatever, can't erase my good times with Mar-vell.
He it was retarded. I bet the only reason they turned him into a woman is so that captain marvel doesn't have a male role model or a male passing down the power. Meh they really want the girl power shit in this movie. I don't really care I wasn't gonna watch it anyway
>is anyone pissed off for what they did with Marvell?
>doesn't tell us what they did
this is shitty bait.
He's a legacy character who has had impact on the industry of course im going to give a shit especially because of the context for why im salty about the whole thing.
They genderswapped him with next to no proper reason for doing so plot wise. I would have been cool with it if she was a badass, but she was just a pussy bitch who did jack shit.
Damn straight.
From what im seeing in this thread I doubt he'll ever get the respect he deserves, even from the MCU which would kick his ass to the curb just to push the preachy as fuck undertones of the movie.
It's fake interest
is there a reason to keep him a male if his impact in the movie is as mininal as you put it?
Hey Yea Forums tourists, pretending like Yea Forums didn't care about Mar-vell is an easy way to expose yourself. Eat shit, shills.
yet Yea Forums talks more about Carol than Mar-Vell
its not just the genderswapping its his actual role and portrayal in general, he needed more screen time to flesh out certain aspects of the plot, you'll know what I mean if you've seen the movie, that alone would have pissed people off, no doubt but doing a gender swap just to serve the female focused undertones of the film are pretty dumb, they could easily have kept his portrayal more faithful without effecting said message/undertones, its just cheap and lazy as all fuck.
Why's there so many discord trannies in this thread?
legit
>with next to no proper reason for doing so
They turned the ancient from an old Tibetan to a young celtic woman in Dr. strange.
MCU is not 616, they aren't always going to make things identically. There is no need for justification.
>just to push the preachy as fuck undertones of the movie.
I just saw the movie and it isn't preachy at all.
That doesn't mean its not going to change public opinion on said characters. Wouldn't it be better if "mainstream" audiences had a better understanding of the character especially one with such a influential history effecting Marvel stories and Carol Danvers as a character.
They had no obligation to stay true to the character however doing justice to the character in the long haul would have done service to the movie.
I stopped watching Marvel movies after what they did to Ghost.
Mostly because Mar-Vell is dead since 40 years and Carol still gets comics. But bad new material doesn't mean that co prefers Carol to Marv. I like Carol as a fuck up that keeps going and not that bland shit Marvel turned her in.
I just got back from the movie. Marvell went AWOL on the Kree because fuck the war, posed as a scientist in Project Pegasus and created a warpspeed engine to take a bunch of Skrull refugees to another planet where they can be safe from the Kree who are the real bad guys and Carol was hopped-up on Kree propaganda. Carol offered to pilot the plane with Mar-Vell but Jude Law shot it down and then killed her because she's technically a traitor and Carol continues her mission to save the Skrulls and stop the Kree war.
as you can see Mar-Vell did plenty in the movie and being gender swapped had nothing to do with it. your narrative is retarded.
>Mostly because Mar-Vell is dead since 40 years
exactly. Carol has always been more interesting as both Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel. that's simply the truth.
Genis and Mar-Vell do have the better stories though. Give me a good Carol story or desribe her personality. Eapecially since the 10s.
More interesting than Mar-vell, yes
That doesn't however make her a likeable character, which is what Marvel wanted her to be.
You can't even spell Mar-Vell and I'm supposed to think you ever cared about his character?
Also at this point "Mar-vell" is basically an OC who only shares the 'infiltrated NASA/USAF with a Lawson identity' trait
>That doesn't mean its not going to change public opinion on said characters.
There isn't a strong public opinion on that character to start with.
I wonder if the regular people in the Marvel universe feel similarly about him as well. I find it an interesting concept of Carol walking around town and people talking in conversation about how great she is but also shits on Mar-Vell. "Wasn't there a guy captain marvel?", "who cares? guy was a nobody. Didn't do anything as great the Current captain marvel", comments like that. She was one of his closes human friends, owed her life to him, the woman was in love with the man for a time. She also wasn't there at his death bed while nearly the whole super community was. Hell, she didn't even hear about his death until mouths later while hearing about in passing. Yeah, suffice to say she was not happy to hear about it in such a manner. "What? Marvel's Dead?!?!", "Wait you didn't know?". I mean a lot of people don't care in the real world but the people close to him do. Carol hearing about her friend being disrespected constantly would make her annoyed and angry. Maybe Enough to write some type of book so people in honor of her dear friend about his contribution in the super human community.
when was the last time anyone on Earth gave any kind of a fuck about Mar-Vel?
Only Carol did during her Ms Marvel run in the late 2000's and early 2010's
Just like Carol
How would you feel if Carol had a personality similar to Samus Aran?
Whats her personality?
This argument is moronic because if they had Mar-Vell as a man you'd all still be complaining when Carol fights the embodiment of the Supreme Intelligence in Mar-Vell's form. You'd all be going "OH OF COURSE SHE HAS TO FIGHT A MANIFESTATION OF HER MALE ROLE MODEL IN ORDER TO BECOME A STRONG WOMAN REEEEE"
This is more horseshit outrage disguised as reasonable discourse about "accuracy."
>Marv'ell
Great job retard
A willful and caring lone wolf.
Totally subserviant to a male figure
Filled with PTSD
Has a complex where she is a crippled mother to an alien being
Most thread shit on Carol tho
Nope.
I'm pretty sure that if anyone who isn't a super-geek like some of us (Hi, I'm user and I am a ferocious geek) thinks of "Captain Marvel" at all, it's the "SHAZAM" dude. Even then, it's probably only an accident.
>MCU is shit
What a surprise
It's like Abin-Sur, he's a critical role even if it's small. He's a legend in his own right. Why does every time a fan say something casuals go "DUR NO ONE CARES ABOUT THIS CHARACTER" just because you don't read those comics doesn't mean others don't.
I'm not seeing the movie, what happened? I'm surprised he was in it at all.
>I completely miss the Death of Captain Marvel story times that got posted for months around here because I'm a leddit tourist.
This. They need to synch with the comics, not try to rewrite them for their own purposes and confuse readers away from comics even more.
I am. I actually like Mar-Vell’s lore and stories, and I love Genie-Vell, so aping all of that just for the worst and blandest holder of the title was a kick in my nuts. Way to shit on one of the flagships of Marvel’s cosmic shenanigans.
Weak bait, no one would remember Carol for like a decade if she weren't a footnote on Rogue's history.
>I don’t read comics so there’s no way people ever read and liked that thing I didn’t read
I keep seeing this, and it never stops being retarded.
>They turned the ancient from an old Tibetan to a young celtic woman in Dr. strange.
stupid shit, shit movie
>they aren't always going to make things identically
>always
>identically
understatements of the year
*Genis
That’s what I get for phone posting.
There would literally be no MCU or modern cosmic Marvel stories without Starlin's Mar-Vell run, Tommy.
There's a bit of a difference between Abin Sur and Mar-vell though. Abin Sur literally died in his first appearance while Mar-vell was a character of his own for 2 decades before his death and his kids taking up his legacy.
It's not the same thing at all. You could make Abin Sur a woman and I really don't think reasonable people would give a shit because Abin Sur was created to serve the character of Hal Jordan. Same with the Ancient One and Doctor Strange. They were supporting characters that existed to progress the story of the hero from day one.
Mar-Vell, on the other hand, was created first. Mar-Vell had 60 issues to his name and launched Marvel's OGN line. Carol Danvers only exists because of Mar-Vell and she only got the title and the movie because he fucking died and vacated it. And that's not even counting Monica, Genis, and Phyla who likewise had a claim and either died or vacated it. Genis being the biggest of the three, having a run almost as long as his father.
I'm not bitter about Carol getting the title or even the movie, but it would be nice if they acknowledged how much she owes to Mar-Vell. I fully believe they could have could done it in a way that honors both Marv and Carol and shows how men and women can have a good working relationship and friendship.
Yeah, because he’s a male. Why make a movie about established characters if you want to change everything? You tarded or you just like ruining things?
it's a weird guy to downplay/erase when you're in the middle of an infinity gauntlet movie
Only in the fact that a lot of the cosmic stuff you know today was developed in his comic and it allowed for Starlin to do Adam Warlock.
To shitpost about her which is no better, can't even recall the last time people had a decent conversation regarding Carol.
As Ms Marvel I agree, as Captain Marvel? Eeehhhh.
Even then Genis was more interesting than her and had better stories but that means shit now.
To add to this, without Mar-Vell we definitely wouldn't have Gruenwald's Quasar which really expanded the fabric of Marvel Cosmic and created and tied together a lot of shit we take for granted now. Quasar was the direct successor of Mar-Vell as Cosmic Protector and a reboot of Marvel Boy who was retconned as a Uranian, an off-shoot of the Eternals related to the Titans who were created by, yep, Jim Starlin. And Silver Surfer had a Cosmic origin but before Englehart's run he was just a loser who bummed around Earth with the Defenders and the FF moping about his long-lost girlfriend. Mar-Vell and Warlock showed that you don't have to center every story around Earth or Earthbound heroes, that you can get out into space and tell trippy stories that still resonated with readers.
>(Requiem and that Secret Invasion mini who was actually great in spite of everything).
What the hell is Requiem? And choosing the Secret Invasion mini makes you look like you're proving right about this being fake outrage, because the best Mar-Vell stuff wasn't just Death Of, but also Starlin's run on Captain Marvel.
They also made her into a person who died in Carol's backstory right before she lost her memories, and that she was the one who developed the lightspeed engine the Kree are searching for throughout the whole movie while she was undercover inside the US Air Force.
Lol Mar-Vell has nothing to little in common with Abin-Sur but the fact that the movie made him one and I'm seeing people like you comparing Marv to Abin-Sur just made me realize that Marvel Studios wanted to avoid making Carol's origin similar to GL and Perlman, who wrote the first Captain Marvel draft, wanted to avoid making her Superman with boobs. Yet they backfire on that first one hard and Feige keeps comparing her to Superman.
Nice to see that Yea Forums still make good comments sometimes.
Yes, early on in his run Roy Thomas developed a lot of the lore of the Kree and Skrulls, who were just recurring Fantastic Four villains. When Jim Starlin took over he created Cosmic entities like Eon and developed the characters of Drax, the Titans, and Thanos that he created in Iron Man. He used these same characters in his run on Warlock as well, where he developed the Soul Gem from Roy Thomas' Adam Warlock (aka Jesus Christ Superhero) and laid the groundwork that would eventually blossom into Infinity Gauntlet. Mark Gruenwald's Quasar tried to fill the void left by Mar-Vell and created a lot more Cosmic Entities.
Basically, Marvel Cosmic was primarily created by Stan and Jack, Roy Thomas, Jim Starlin, and Steve Englehart, with a lot of help from Steve Gerber, Chris Claremont, Bill Mantlo, and Mark Gruenwald.
I can't believe that Marvel scared Starlin that way after everything he did to them, why the fuck they trust the ideas of those massive hacks that ruined most of Marvel characters instead of the guy who pretty much made cosmic Marvel great?
I do apologize, I mixed up in my read Silver Sufer Requiem to "The Death of Captain Marvel". When I mentioned that I liked the volumes of Mar-vell's as the titular Captain Marvel, it's kinda implied Jim Starlin stuff. Heck I called out a specific story from it, even if I mixed the name.
I am not outrraged at all, just wanted to point that I care for Mar-vell. MCU can do whatever, I still will care for him.
Modern Marvel doesn't give a shit about the foundation they're built on. Marvel as a whole died in the late 80s/early 90s, the quality stuff we've gotten since then has mostly been due to fluke or flying under the radar, and most of the time Marvel has something truly great on their hands, whether they realize it or not, they kill it in the fucking cradle with their negligence or ruin it later in the pursuit of more money.
>flying under the radar
Literally how we got good stuff in the mid-to-late 00s. They were focused on shitting on the Avengers and lots of good stuff happened in the background.
>You could make Abin Sur a woman and I really don't think reasonable people would give a shit
Kill yourself, cuck.
NOOOOOOOOO MY NARRATIVE
I can beleive it, after all, people pretend to like Carol Danvers.
good job you proved his point
>It's like Abin-Sur,
Rhomann Dey was Abin-Sur, not Mar-Vell.
Typical Silver Surfer story before Englehart's run
>Silver Surfer flies about place on Earth
>Surfer says how wonderful place is
>Surfer whines about Shalla-Bal
>Surfer sees enemy
>"Why is my existence always followed by destruction!?"
>Surfer defeats conflict
>"If only my Shalla-Bal were here?"
Buy the next issue.
>his
It was a workable compromise.
I have recently read those old issues, and the fact of the matter is, they ARE egregious.
-he- wasn't.
In the movie, Mar-Vell is not a male warrior, but a female scientist.
And while I initially was a bit... miffed to say the least, now I am 'eh'. It actually makes a little more sense, and is kind of necessary in the context of the MCU.
Although there really is no pressing reason that they genderswapped him. Except, of course, that Captain Marvel can't possibly owe her power to a man!
Or maybe people are just tired of Carol Danvers being forced into the spotlight and view Mar-Vell being overhauled as reflective of the past 30ish years of the property being completely sidelined in favor of a much blander iteration that was started as an attempt to make their own "Wonder Woman" as equally cynical and soulless as Ike's attempt to make the Inhumans into X-Men.
But nah, it can't be that......
Because half the time these days it's not an actual fan of a character saying this, but some trolling dipshit fake fan who's knowledge only comes from wiki and keeps the tab open to sound like he actually cares. And its easy to tell which is which.
