It's racist
It was pretty interesting. The authr's own issues about how to make the comic were a good addition.
One of my favorite historical fiction novels. It was a gas to read.
Why do you think so, Vladek racism is shown as being pretty hypocritical, you mean how there are pretty much no sympathetic Polish or German characters?
CARLOS
Unfortunately I could see this becoming a popular perception moving forward.
Even just the discussion of 'who is predator' vs 'who is a prey' these days could leave you labeled as a racist. I don't think any kind of respected person would challenge the 'cat vs rat' metaphor but it kind of falls apart under scrutiny once you move much further past that.
I think pic related did a good job maintaining the metaphor but that was mostly due to removing the ability to draw direct comparisons to specific races or people.
I mean book portrayal of Poles when compared to Germans (you know nation of actual nazis and who did holocaust).
Or you saying that Jew portraying people as pig is doing it in neutral or sympathetic way?
Very idea of making predator/prey analogy in case of Germans and Jews while avoiding it in case Germans and Poles is offensive too
And off course negative portrayal of Polish characters is problem too.
It wouldn't be as bad if comic was treated in way it is, as personal story of descendant of survivor and way to cope. Not as documentary and teaching tool
Zootopia is metaphor of racism and multicultural relationships while this still can be something what gives you valid it reason to criticize its unlike stories where specific nations and races and represented by specific animals, those analogies will crush and burn.
I honestly still need to read the second volume. I heard it isn't as good as the first but I mean the first is like A++ so yeah seems tough to beat.
Perhaps the jews already got to my brain and i need to kill myself, before i do can you tell me how is it portrayed as a documentary and teaching tool?
For me it was like, this guy's dad got fucked up during WW2, and he never got unfucked.
I had my little brother read it (16) and now he hates the Jews with passion.
I kinda agree with you, Spiegelman doesn't depict the Poles really as the victims so much as secondary opressors, showing up as kapos and some even as collaborators.
I like that Art doesn't attempt to turn his father into a hero. If anything, Vladek (was that his name?) comes across as almost a caricature of a Jew, psychotically greedy, conniving, always using other people to his own advantage, and quite racist himself (against the "schwartzer"). He rejects his first fiancee because her family wasn't wealthy and says that like it was the normal thing to do. Vladek is also explictly an unreliable narrator, and his story changes on the fly a few times so the version of events we see in the book has been "edited" by him already before it even reaches Art's ears.
I think it's a good read.
Which is hilarious when you consider that his family were bourgeoisie exploiters who were actively oppressing the Polish workers, while refusing to adopt Polish culture or traditions or even speak the same language.
>before i do can you tell me how is it portrayed as a documentary and teaching tool?
Ask american education system
>written by a man named Art
>not a single colored panel
I've had the really nice red and black hardcover single volume version for years now and I still haven't read it because I can't into no color.
the Holocaust is my favorite fiction
it's part of the charm of this whole pseudo ''expressionistic'' wordless novel look'
i GUESS
You are correct and it's done like that on purpose. It is supposed to portray jews as hypocritical assholes,
i like how they portrayed the so called "death camps" as the forced labour camps they really were. Strange how there were no gas chambers shlomo
>I had my little brother read it (16) and now he hates the Jews with passion
How on earth did he come away with that sentiment?
>what does Yea Forums think of it?
I've seen a few storytimes and Yea Forums loves it. They appreciate that Vladek is the jewiest jew to ever jew and every time there's some new reader in awe of how he was able to parlay his fast talking and quick thinking skills into helping him survive his trials. The story as a presentation of Vladek as a person both through his own eyes and his son's works very well to create a very rounded character that appeals to readers as someone to follow. Not necessarily like, though many do, but someone who's character and story are compelling for his virtues and vices.
I personally love it. It's the sort of human focused historical biography I like and it's a very emotional work on several levels.
I liked it a lot.
Mostly because it's not just about holocaust, but also about the family.
The comic doesn't take anything back. We see jews being jews, mafia full of nepotism. Vladek goes from idealistic young man into a bitter racist cunt, who treats his kids like shit. There is great point, that big suffering doesn't necessary mean the person is necessary good, or learns moral lessons.
They banned me the last time when discussing this book, so I will keep my thoughts to myself this time.
almost as if his father went to a death camp instead of a labor camp, he wouldn't have been able to procreate and tell his story to his son
dont be such a retard, goy
Jews doing Jew things
Art doesn't have to be in color. In fact not being in color is probably an artistic decision on his part
That's Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld though, not Maus
This. Why do people forget that Spiegelman essentially deconstructs the whole victim complex of Jews (in America specifically)?
I thought the whole point was it was that the author himself didn't understand what he was writing about. I always thought it was kind of sad that even after hearing about all his father did to survive, he still didn't understand why his father behaved the way he did. The behavior he saw as the caricature of a stereotypical jew was necessary to survive for him in Nazi Germany.
It's well paced and offers an unique portrayal of the jewish people, as the author saw for himself that being the victim of a terrible disaster doesn't make someone automatically a good person. It has some unrealistic choices morphed by the personal thoughts and ignorance of the author, mostly about the polaks, who just wanted to survive just like the jews. I've never met someone describing it as an historical book, cause it isn't. It's very personal
>Not as documentary and teaching tool
Who is doing that? It really sucks if people are taking it that way. The comic makes pretty obvious it's own (or the father's) bias. It's even funny how stereotypical the Spiegelman's father is, they point it out.
>Depict jews as vermin
You sound like average /pol/tard
He showed that Jews themselves could be racist and discriminate but /pol/ probably hasnt read it
Mixed bag. On the one hand, the actual story about his father's youth and experiences during WW2 were interesting. All the personal drama "Wah I have a hard time connecting to my father" shit bored the hell out of me. Would have been nice if it just focused on the WW2 story, but no, we can't have an interesting story because the attention whore writer MUST make it about himself.
Hey now, you’re talking about the inventor of the push pop! Have some respect!
Read beastars if you want zootopia but good
Art's constant whining interludes and the fact that its a comic where the characters are animals are the two things that separates Maus from any other Holocaust memoir.
I liked his interludes kinda, its like having Woody Allen interrupt a holocaust movie to whine about he's gonna make it good and other random relationship problems
there's a bit where the dad is shown washing himself in cold water every day, effectively acclimatising himself to the extreme conditions while simultaneously maintaining hygiene
that's stuck with me for years and been genuinely useful in real life
portraying jews as filthy rodents that nobody likes, yes, i agree.
>All the personal drama "Wah I have a hard time connecting to my father"
It was very fashionable kind of story for Boomers.
why even bother making non capeshit comics for an american audience?
>its like having Woody Allen interrupt a holocaust movie to whine
lol
funny cos it's true
cry more incel
>gay nightclub music
