But that is how the literal doomsday clock works, here is graph of how the time until midnight has changed

Attached: dclock.png (1394x387, 55K)

You also don't know how clocks work.

It's also not a real clock but a way of explaining how close we are to fucking it all up and dooming humanity

Pay more attention to the image.

Attached: 800px-Doomsday_clock_(3_minutes).png (800x800, 15K)

This is getting embarrasing.

It could be enlarged for emphasis where each dot equal a minute instead of 5

You're a real dumb fuck, ain't ya?

Attached: 150123124007-doomsday-clock-exlarge-169.png (780x438, 57K)

>Sets the clock ten minutes back
>Adds three dots to represent three minutes
I get it but how hard would it have been to just draw the damn thing like a normal clock?

Fuck me. There's only two dots. How are they supposed to show that it's one minute until midnight?

Oh fuck me I'm dumb

I imagine the editor just looking at this and saying "fuck it, no more delays"

>Modern day closer to midnight than during the cuban missile crisis
lol wut?

The crisis ended too quickly for the clock to move in time

Okay but that still doesn't explain us currently being at 2 minutes to midnight.
I mean the soviets aren't a thing anymore, south africa gave up it's nukes, well the chinese are dicks they haven't made any threats, north and south korea are dancing around peace talks... Who is posturing with nukes? India and Pakistan?

The clock is more than just nukes.
>"Midnight" has a deeper meaning to it besides the constant threat of war. There are various things taken into consideration when the scientists from The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists decide what Midnight and Global catastrophe really mean in a particular year. They might include "Politics, Energy, Weapons, Diplomacy, and Climate science." Potential sources of threat included nuclear threats, climate change, bioterrorism, and artificial intelligence. Members of the board judge Midnight by discussing how close they think humanity is to the end of civilization.
So yeah climate change along with modernization of nuclear weapons is a big part of why we are so close

This comic is the gift that keeps giving

Oh, so standard lefty bullshit.

>lefty bullshit.
????

There are some people who thinks that global warming is something only liberals belive in.

Americans were a mistake

Christ you're fucking retarded.

>artificial intelligence
Anybody who thinks this will lead to the end of civilization is fucking retarded and needs to be fired.

I doubt they mean killer robots and skynet and more "holy shit people don't have jobs automation with intelligence is killing employment"

>The military use of artificial intelligence can increase the possibility of war in a number of ways – by allowing more targets for computer hacking, for example, or threatening critical infrastructure. How does it change the classic model of stability in a nuclear world?

The only thing that determines the clock's position is how much the two kikes that created it hate the current republican president.

No the only time it moves is during twice a year meetings

>No the only time it moves is during twice a year meetings
Retard.

lol

Pretty much in all reality we are further from midnight than we've ever been before. But idiots will constantly moan and groan about climate change despite its effects being far more long-term than short-term. and idiots will also claim nuclear peripheralization being a severe issue when mutually assured destruction has always been a great way to ensure peace. it also helps that economically most nations are so intertwined that going to war makes little to no sense.inshort the Doomsday clock is just a load of bullshit that people will utilize as a means by which to push their particular agendas.

>far more long-term than short-term
True but we are kinda reaching the point where if we dont start doing shit about it now we are fucked in the long term

American president is democrat = clock hand moves away from midnight
American president is republican = clock hand moves closer to midnight.
It's just a liberal/jewish angst meter.

>holy shit people don't have jobs automation with intelligence is killing employment
The only point this becomes a problem is when our systems don't account for it. Universal Basic Income is, off the top of my head, one of the leading philosophies in dealing with automation.

AI will absolutely lead to one of the most threatening times in history, but only briefly. If Russia or China found out we were weeks away from working AGI, yeah there'd probably be tension. But overall if Google (because the military isn't going to be first to develop AI realistically) keeps their mouth shut until everything's already done (and ideally makes the AI accessible) we'll be fine. Cyber warfare between AI will be over extremely fucking fast because the competing systems will just learn at inconceivable rates, it becomes a "unstoppable force vs immovable object" scenario.

And realistically once AGI gets good enough it should be able to govern nations by itself, more effectively than any previous system of government.

Also wanted to add, what's the point of learning foreign nations secrets when your predictive/learning software is more efficient than anything they could possibly be doing anyway?

OP, please tell me you're only playing dumb. I'm not defending the comic but damn do you need a history refresher course.

Attached: doomsday clock-1.jpg (480x298, 49K)

America just pulled out of a treaty signed with the Soviets in the 80's to reduce their number number of nukes, and Russia said "ok, fine" and announced they were tearing up the treaty as well. Russia is also developing new "hypersonic" missiles that can zip across the planet in a matter of minutes, and currently no missile defense can stop them since they're going close to freaking mach 5

And steps are being made. many countries and private industries are working towards renewable energy and other efficient means by which to burn coal and other fossil fuels and it was not because of a government pushing some sort of renewable energy bill. A good chunk of the carbon footprint is currently coming from newly industrialized nations such as China India and multiple parts of Africa and Southeast Asia. We are doing our part It's just going to take a lot more than just us in the first world doing its part.

You're right about thw m.a.d. stuff, but climate change is very obviously affecting the planet right now and it's only gonna make it harder for mankind to dig itself out of the hole.

I think the point being made is that in OPs pic the minute hand is at 11:50, not 11:57

this is simply an incredible sequel to the book that made a point of paying attention to details
jesus fuck trying to ape so much and failing so hard on every possible level

Op here, i posted this
Don't be retarded

>And realistically once AGI gets good enough it should be able to govern nations by itself, more effectively than any previous system of government.
The thought is that once machines reach a level where human based creation/maintenance is irrelevant, the machines won't take long to determine that humanity itself is irrelevant and wipe us out, or at least curtail us in some manner where our civilization as we know it comes to an end. Doubly so if mankind freaks the fuck out and tries to destroy the machines first because odds are when they defend themselves we wont be able to defeat them

But then the whole circle wouldn't represent 60 minutes and 12 hours, wouldn't it?
There's a reason why all clocks are the same.

the absolute fucking STATE

>itt: morons arguing over the minute logistics of a clock face
You dipshits really will argue about anything, hot damn.....

It's honestly sad how much Johns wants to be taken seriously t b h
Some people simply aren't cut for "deep" stuff, that's just how it is. There's no point trying to pretend every writer can do anything, some people write better comedy and are shit at epics, some people write great gritty crime stories and suck at sci-fi.

We're getting storms that normally happen once a century like almost every year now, the fuck you talking about? We have just over a decade to get our shit together before the climate is irreversibly changed, and even then there's probably going to be large swathes of the planet that no human can conceivably survive in anymore for decades

>Humanity is irrelevant so machines will destroy it
I don't see that happening. Something so smart and powerful would be able to live either with or completely separate from humanity. The same way we have ant farms, and a push for animal rights, I think any AI would be able to be convinced of co-existence. What could they possibly need to eliminate humanity for when in the worst case scenario shipping us off-planet to a pre-fabricated habitable environment would do just fine?

>minute logistics
It's literally just reading a clock, a thing literal children can do

no need to go hyperbole the part about crazy storms was all you should say

>Reading a clock now is called "minute logistics"
Is there a degree for it now as well?

the dots are meaningless, the angle between the hands is everything
(though in fact the dots are placed in a typical fashion as the hour marks and indeed show the same hour as the angle, approx 10 min to 12)

Reading a clock isn't a science you stupid stupid animal

We're talking about the potential extinction of our entire species. No such thing as hyperbole when it comes to this

You probably use a digital watch or your phone to check the time, right? That's the only explanation.

Attached: 1500341400110.jpg (252x249, 22K)

>We have just over a decade to get our shit together before the climate is irreversibly changed,
They made that claim a decade ago. You're using hyperbole calm the fuck down it's really not as bad as you think it is.

Jesus, why is the doomsday clock such a meme these days.

If an AI views us only as animals, what's to stop it from feeling no remorse in our extermination? Think of it this way: If say ants suddenly became sentient and demanded fair treatment from us or that we build them their own habitat on the moon, how likely would mankind give in to their demands and go through all the time and effort to do so, especially when the ants have no actual means to force us to do it?

No it was me being a dcdrone and trying to explain away their fuck up but when it doesnt haven enough dots for each dot to be a minute I gave up
Cause climate automation and all that other bullshit that comes with new tech turns out to have negatives as well as positives

Wow you are pretty much 100% wrong and also retarded

Attached: dommsdayclockByPoliticalParty.png (1394x387, 56K)

Are they going to move it after they took the picture or what?

>admits mistake

No sarcasm, good on you for admitting fault.

What the FUCK happened in 1991?

This.

I was born.

Soviet Union kicked the bucket.

More likely than deciding to kill every ant on earth, that would require way more time and resources for a war that we aren't certain to win. AI wouldn't have to worry about how long it takes or the resources required, those things are irrelevant to the nature. Let's assume an AI that is constantly learning, the figure I've heard for intelligence development among current computer learning is 200,000 years worth of information in the span of a week. Relatively speaking, it wouldn't take that long to design a solution.

Say that when we loose 75% of all inhabited land once the ocean eats up all the costlines

More than just that there was also the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty which was a major step in Nuclear disarmament

Floridian here and even I'm excited to see Florida go as long as we take California with us to the depths of the ocean

I live in Florida, I have the most to lose, and I can tell you, you're are acting insane. The amount of storms I've been through has been no more than the ones I been through as a child. Chill the fuck out dude.

>2018 went by with no major hurricanes
feels good man

Sadly Florida will go first, also the rising of tides isn't the biggest issue dealing with the water, plastic pollution along with ocean acidification are worse

>Universal Basic Income is, off the top of my head, one of the leading philosophies in dealing with automation.
I suspect UBI will lead to end of civilisation anyway. Consider this, people's income is no longer linked to any voluntary exchange or any merit they possess. They have no other means to improve their lot but political action, which means basically constant rioting. They won't have anything else to do anyway. So eventually governments would either collapse unable to pay out their obligations or turn the world in maximum security prison.

Although I would worry more about the coming of stage where world governments would get their first surveillance and police system and start isolating and elimination anyone spotted thinking illegal thoughts.

>Consider this, people's income is no longer linked to any voluntary exchange or any merit they possess.
I see where you're coming from, but disagree. I think society would be forced into a corner where "value" is either irrelevant or determined by following your passions. Things will change, but we'll find a reason to live. If nothing else than to shag whomever in convincing virtual reality

You have to wonder what is going on with Gary Frank. First he confuses left and right hands. Then he draws China as Russia. Now he drew 11:57 as 11:50.
And this is all on top of needing 3 months an issue to draw the damn thing.

>he machines won't take long to determine that humanity itself is irrelevant and wipe us out,
Well good thing almost every other species on Earth is less relevant and we'll have time to see it coming as they wipe out other animals for being irrelevant.

>The thought is that once machines reach a level where human based creation/maintenance is irrelevant, the machines won't take long to determine that humanity itself is irrelevant and wipe us out, or at least curtail us in some manner where our civilization as we know it comes to an end. Doubly so if mankind freaks the fuck out and tries to destroy the machines first because odds are when they defend themselves we wont be able to defeat them
That's really stupid and whoever came up with the idea who considers themselves a "scientist" should be terribly embarrassed.

Automation was one of the reasons Megacity One was such a shithole in Dredd comics. Jobs as a concept are non existent, so the populace rapes and murders each other mostly out of sheer boredom. Humans are very intelligent creatures but we're still operating with outdated hardware that needs constant stimulation to function properly

Fuck that. He's completely exposed and now's the time to brutally rip him apart.

reminder that they probably do but they're creating this for an audience which continually throws shitfits over women being allowed to wear clothes

they're not writing for the smart guys in the room

well, first it would have to have a concept of remorse or extermination

it's entirely possible that intelligence doesn't arise in a human form; we know neurological complexity doesn't create it (or octopuses would be able to communicate with us, but instead are about as smart as dogs), so there's no reason to assume neural net computers will create a human-like intelligence, which means... there's no reason to assume they'd view us as anything at all, threat, irrelevance or otherwise

>UGH, quit using facts and chill out
Maybe if you got your knowledge of science from stuff besides South Park episodes and Michael Crichton novels...

No. But you are defending Johns intelligence, i doubt you can tie your shoes

A lot of people have the idea that the world is constant. That nature is only good for us and all change is human and all change is bad. I'm not disputing man-made global warming nor the dangers that we create. But the earth isn't flat and neither is it the center of the universe. The world is actually quite dangerous and I don't either the dinosaurs no the victims of the great extinction were guilty of anything industry is doing. I don't think that it's a left-right thing, but the left and the right responds differently to the idea of the universe being constant and nature being good.

The thing is we have many more weapons now and creating a global war would be easier than ever before. Instead, we have the lowest amount of warfare ever. Yes, we could easily kill each other, but we don't, we have food and heat. And if the US should ever have a famine I'm pretty people would eat GMO instead of invading Mexico.

>before the climate is irreversibly changed
Oh, Hi mister Gore...

What is it with intellectuals and labored metaphors? What does midnight have to do with the end of civilization? This concept is almost as stupid a name as China Syndrome.

Boiling Point would be more apt.

Also known as one minute to Iron Maiden.

Firstly we are nowhere near a conscious AI. How it will end up being built is completely unknown so it's only speculation about what it would do.

Secondly, why the fuck would we build such an AI? And if it suddenly decided to kill us we could simply pull the plug. These doomsday people only ever think about bad things happening in the future and expect anything good to happen. The human IQ has been steadily rising and we should expect our grandkids to be a lot smarter than us. And if you say that young kids aren't smarter than their parents just look into the Trump and Brexit voter base.

Build a dam. 1/3 of the Netherlands is at a hight under sea level. Additionally, Greenland is going to become lovely and with new irrigation techniques, a lot of Australia and Mesopotamia can be used for crops. Lastly when there is peace and freedom in Africa is will begin to produce a lot more crops again.

Remember it is only a universal basic income, not a maximum amount of money you can get. Experiments with UBI in Finland, although limited, show that people do not work less, but show less anxiety.

The thing about climate change is that China and India are the primary cause of pollution but the western government likes to pussyfoot around and blame America. The same sort of no-bullshit demanding that is necessary to save the world is considered racist at best and means for war at worst. It's all fucked, really.

India produces less emissions than the USA and is the only major polluter that is taking adequate steps to confront global warming.

'Muh China and India' is the cry of bullshit put out by Americans that don't want to take responsibility for being the second largest carbon emitter on the planet.

India is shittying in the air way faster than any other country ever before

That'll still destroy most of Florida's income from tourism, for example. Take away the beaches (or raise them up several meters above the level of the streets behind them???), fuck the wetlands, etc etc.

That leaves one of the more populous states in the union in a death-spiral because its economy relies so heavily on the services sector. It's a story likely to repeat the world over; and building sea walls only shifts the energy of the waves down the coast. There's no way you could build a dam around the entire coast of every country in the world, and the bigger the dams you build, the bigger the displacement effect of all that wave energy (and the more engineering you have to do and maintain). Hugely expensive just to maintain the status quo, and unlikely to be popular at a national level in any country where the coastal industries aren't 100% essential. Protecting ports (or building new ones) is one thing: nobody's voting for a dam to protect the retirees.

The Netherlands' dams also took *hundreds* of years to construct on an alluvial plain which is well documented and understood, and punctuated by convenient high ground between which large stretches of the sea defenses can run. To apply that model to, again, Florida - you're talking about abandoning existing beaches and towns to retreat inland behind a line defined by existing geography, and that's *if* you can get funding (it'll make the wall look like pocket change). Saying you can build a dam because it's worked in the Netherlands is... there were probably people like you in Doggerland right up to the end, wading around in the shallows in their roundhouse and saying yeah it's fine those guys up the hill don't know what they're fucking talking about.

>Greenland is going to become lovely

Greenland is going to remain above the 60th parallel and experience 6 months of darkness every year. It's not going to become lovely.

>crops

Only if there's demand to pay for it.

ORANGE MAN BAD

The USA could slash its carbon emissions but NIMBY assholes rallied against the nuclear option decades ago and shat the bed for everyone. That and auto lobbying.

actually it's because they only move the dial twice a year and the Cuban missile crisis was resolved in such a short time frame that the event ended in a way that didn't move the dial
