Carol would work better in the universe if her faults were allowed to take center stage and she wasn't treated so well by other characters and creators, ironically Civil War 2 was a step in the right direction with her but it was written so terribly
This is the key to making her comic sell better, but maybe Disney prioritizes something else, though I think that's foolish

I'm actually interested in reading more Captain Marvel before the movie, just to see the kind of wild ride the mantle took before Carol's boring ass took it up. I've already read all of Starlin and most of Thomas's work on Mar-Vell, absolutely adored it, and I'm really hoping it's not all downhill from here. Are there any good Monica, Vell kids, and post-Ms. Marvel Danvers comics worth checking out?
BTW Everyone should read Starlin's Captain Marvel, it's a really fun cosmic ride.

For Phyla just read Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest, Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar (which is pretty ehh) and DnA Guardians of the Galaxy.

Since you won't get many honest opinions regarding Carol post-Ms Marvel: check her Captain Marvel Vol 2 by KSD, her Butters/Fazekas/Gage stuff (I believe it's all Vol. 4, during Civil War 2) and Life of Captain Marvel by Stohl. You could also try Thompson's Captain Marvel which seems decent enough so far, even though it's barely 2 issues in.

The title is just pure vanity on Marvel's part. Mar-vell's only claim to fame was his cancer, but people aren't really familiar with the character's background. Casuals know next to nothing about Kree shit, Rick Jones, the Negative Zone, being Protector of the Universe, or his encounters with Thanos which is kinda sad because it's a lot better than what Carol brings.
Captain Marvel really has more value over in DC and rightly so.

It’s like any word really, nothing but noise coming out of our mouths until we give it meaning. So the magic word can make Billy transform, summon lightning, or even cast a spell.
