I don't think I've ever found them compelling in any medium, they are always just some conventionally attractive woman who's also a super-fighter who can unrealistically beat up people (men) twice her size and never be the butt of any of the jokes, maybe they'll be snarky to the dweeby male lead we are supposed to empathise with and denigrate him for his cowardice and do things more competently than him, (zoinks!). Whenever I see the "badass grrrllll" character, my eyes just glaze over because I know that nothing interesting is going to happen with them, it's basically the same eye-rolling feeling I get whenever I see a little kid in a movie who wants to be "one of the team".

I was with you until this. Personally I want the opposite. We can have badass women, but they should be badass by human standards. It makes for a more interesting character when they know their limits and pick their fights accordingly. This is why I disagree with the "all characters must have personality flaws" dogma as well. Flaws, no, they are not necessary for every character. Limits are more important. Physical weakness, lack of stamina, poor body coordination, bad people skills, things that need to be compensated for and overcome but not flaws per se. A female who manages to be badass in spite of her acknowledged natural physical setbacks will only be more interesting and deserving of admiration for it.

Sure, I can get behind that too. I think it's a "worst of both worlds" situation right now where women are portrayed as super badass, but don't look like it or have any real fun with the role, and also aren't "flawed" in an way that leads to any interesting dynamics.

I also think that there's plenty of fun to be had with a heroic "badass" character in an Arnold Schwarzenegger way, but I've yet to see that done in a way I find enjoyable with a female lead in the last couple decades (or a male lead in the same way to be honest), since every time we have a female character in that kind of role they just end up in the boring "badass grrrrlll" played-out tropes I mentioned before.

I remember the start of the whole feminist "strong female character" thing, and it had nothing to do with physical strength or being badass. I remember when it was still about wanting female characters to have fully fleshed out personality.
