So this film was based off a novel, right? Has anyone read it?
Does it cover anything more with regards to the Other Mother? Like who she is, or why she's capturing Children? Is there a backstory or anything of the sort? I can't remember the film too well but I don't think you learn much at all about the Other world/Mother other than she's evil.
Is there a story there for her? Anything beyond just being a villain?

yes, she's some kind of twisted fairy and in the book she mentions killing her own mother
Loved the movie. I wish John from They Might Be Giants had been the voice of the father the entire time rather than just the one song. I'm not much of a Gaiman fan. I think he jerks himself off a little bit too much for incorporating fairies and mythology.
i've read the book several times
i don't remember it all but watched the movie once and thought it was an abortion in comparison
Born a twisted fairy, or some sort of incident?
None of this is covered in the film, right? I can't remember it too well, but I don't remember being told much about her other than her being the villain who captures kids
No motive, no reason, you guys reckon the film would've been improved if they had covered it? I still love it
she has much longer conversations with the cat and the other mother in the book which reveal a lot more.
they just left it more mysterious in the movie.
Nah, they never address her origin. From what I got from the movie, she's an evil insectine mimic who uses illusion and trickery to suck the love out of the species that she's mimicking... Hey wait a second...
Wy were you born
Probably the most important difference between the movie and the original book is that in the original Coraline isn't enticed by the Other Mother for even a second; she's too creepy. The chicken she prepares has no taste at all. The point is she's totally inhuman and is mimicking the part rather badly.
Interesting. Would you say the book's worth a read? It didn't seem like they left it mysterious in the movie, just that they didn't address it at all. Her background or why she's the way she is isn't at all covered.
Someone I know watched it and mentioned we don't really find out who the Other Mother is, which just got me thinking since it's been a while since I've watched it. Might be worth rewatching.
Also Coraline best Laika film
There's also the fact that her attempts to mimic Coraline's actual mom are....subpar to say the least.
There's also the Door, which is something far worse than the Beldam is.
>Also Coraline best Laika film
God damnit, it bother how true this is. Laika make good strong films, and I respect their process. But none of their movies got me like Coraline. I'm not entirely sure why, maybe it's the cat.
It's a short book, so go for it. Note that Wybie is a movie only addition, so Coraline spends a lot of time talking to herself.
I would recommend it though it doesn't go into detail about the other mother very much either
Thanks, given it's short I might as well
Hopefully find it online somewhere.
It's just that it doesn't expand too much on the other world and how things came to be there. The book might have a little more and even if it doesn't, shit, I liked the film anyway so I'll probably enjoy it
>tfw we'll never have that full soundtrack
I love the film adaptation but I'm still sad that they left out my favorite part from the book: the other father in the basement scene I can understand why though.
At least the scene with the man upstairs and the rats had a semblance of the creepiness present in the book.
Chilling scene, man. Really left an impression when I first read it.
What is the other mother then? Is she based off mythology like some sort of Witch?
The movie model looks like a modernized version of the cover, that's cool.
Have you heard the audiobook? Those parts are read very well, especially the rat song sections
A spider that eats kids. I assume the rats are scavenger that work with other mother, there recon kids. Then other mother sends her doll spy and uses it to make a web universe to trap the kids
One of the victims has fairy wings
That should tell you enough
She's based on old European fairies
The kind that would fuck with humans and leave them to die
I think the most interesting thing that the book addresses is the gateway between the two worlds. In the movie it's easy to completely overlook it, but the book mentions that it's an entity that's not only completely separate from the other mother, but also older than her. So while the other mother is a mystery to us, the actual gateway is a mystery to both us and the other mother. Not to mention that it's apparently a living creature in some way.
Truth be told, though, I don't want an answer to any of this. I want to continue wondering.
Good Omens > Graveyard Book > Sandman >>>Coraline > Neverwhere > Stardust >>>> trash > Brian Michael Bendis > American Gods.
Coraline also theorizes (correctly) that it's aware of her when she's fleeing the Other World near the end. It doesn't harm her directly, but she guesses that if she slipped up somehow or otherwise fucked up, it would have never let her go, and would likely consume her.
I always liked the simple description of it being very old and very slow and still remaining entirely unseen, it really added to the tension
I have not read the book and if it explains who or what the Other Mother is, I'm glad I haven't read it. I think explaining her would kill any mystery and make her less intimidating.
>So while the other mother is a mystery to us, the actual gateway is a mystery to both us and the other mother.
That's why I like the cat. His and other mother's feud go way before Coraline shows up. After Coraline defeat other mother the cat's still able to use the portals
The book never explicitly states what she is. But there's enough hints given and historical allusions that you can piece it together.
There's also a comic that I believe is based on the novel, not the movie. I preferred the movie over the comic. She only visits the Other World once before the kidnapping stuff in the comic so it really confused and disappointed me that Other Mother thought she would just accept the deal. Feels like Other Mother spends more time buttering her up in the movie.
The movie has a temptation and redemption bit where Coraline is taken in by the shallow pleasures of the false world and then has to atone for toying with an evil force by risking herself to defeat it and rescue her parents whose real value she failed to appreciate before.
The Coraline of the original is based on Gaiman's daughter so obviously she doesn't spend half the story being an obnoxious little shit.
The key difference is that the Other Mother in the movie is vastly more skilled in mimicking and appealing to human mindsets, which is how she almost managed to get Coraline to fall for the sweetened lies and temptations. The Beldam in the novel is FAR too inhuman and alien for all but the most naive and desperate of kids to want to stay with. Coraline pretty quickly figured out that the Other World was a mssive spidertrap in the novel just from the Beldam's actions alone, and wouldn't have come back had she not been preemptively trapped.
The movie Other Mother is essentially what happens when an inhuman entity spends all its time refining its act to get its victims. The book Other Mother is essentially what happens when said entity has a vague understanding of humanity, but is utterly unable to conceal its alien nature no matter how hard it tries.
Kubo was so tonally all over the place
It's like they wanted to make a serious movie, but so desperately wanted a crack at the mainstream that they added comic relief everywhere and it never let the film feel right or moments settle. It has good moments, I don't even think the basic plot is really even an issue, it's the constant silly jokes that seem forced in that are a problem.
is boxtrolls good? what else do Laika do besides that, Kubo, and Paranorman
Boxtrolls is okay, kind of overstays its welcome
Laika right now is working on their 5th movie, Missing Link set to come out in april.
Boxtrolls is Laika's worst movie and it's still better than most animated shit that comes to theaters.
>Hopefully find it online somewhere
Have fun

Laika peaked with Coraline
All downhill afterwards
Coraline and ParaNorman were the best two in my own opinion. Kubo comes close but it didn't quite reach the same levels.
I wish Laika would hire actual decent writers for their movies, their craft visually stuns and evolves over time but they get more and more hollow since ParaNorman.
