At any rate, my thoughts on the SuperWonder relationship was settled in an Action comics issue where Clark and Diana get pulled into a war alongside DC's Thor where, thanks to mystical time dilation, they help him fight a centuries long war against monsters.
There's a moment where the two of them are alone together after hundreds of years of fighting together and just as they're about to kiss, Clark turns away and says, "I can't."
Because he couldn't just forget her.

Action Comics was the first of the two, intended to have stories for multiple different heroes in each issue until they just made it Superman exclusively. For instance, I believe the Guardian was in early Action Comics.
The Superman title was made a few months after Superman became a massive success.
The same is true of Batman.

Bendis' run being retconned as the result of a "White Spite" being attached to Clark for a night. The shriveled chubby looking parasitic plant was Mongol's attempt to create a new strain of Black Mercy and while it desperately wanted to be black it just couldn't make the cut, always running out of steam for it's run is finished. (Young) Jon is crouched over the twitching thing when it suddenly lunges at him only for Krypto to catch it mid-air, maul it, and bury it in the yard. Maybe it could come back in some form as a reoccurring villain that looks more humanoid to remind people what a shit writer Bendis is, akin to a modern Funky Flashman.
