The fall of the fae is intimately tied to the end of the current race of man. I think one of the fae queens say that the fae were supposed to ride out as an army to buy time for mankind when the Ogdru Hem went rampant, but Gruagach fucks that all up. If the various spirits and demi-gods we see in the story (like Vold) are supposed to be the same "race" as the daoine sidh (which I definitely believe to be true), then you could see it as mankind's gods rallying to preserve as much of their charges as possible.
I'd say at this point though, when Mignola was writing it, it's more about wonder and magic dying out in the world. Which also fits the meta story, as the BPRD eventually transitions into a military-style organization, with the old staff who did things like collect talismans and relics, literally dying off.

I've always wondered if it's purposeful that Hellboy is just constantly dealing with threats with his fists instead of some kind of ritualistic or diplomatic solution. Later on down the line, we seem to see that head-on violence doesn't always solve things.

The American vampires remind me a lot more of the cold people. I guess if you want some sort of answer, then it'd be the "source" or origin of the vampire strain. Western vampires seem to be associated with Ogdru Hem (O'Donnell told us that the Meso-American gods were mostly Hems, and we saw them turn Esteban into "Camazotz"), while European vampires are associated with Hecate. Also if we take that scene from BPRD Vampire seriously, then there may be ritualistic magic being used in the process of creating the vampires which could explain why they are less bestial.
The penanggalan could very well not be a "vampire" at all.
