True the story just seems really off. One thing that always bother me is the start. You see they become musicians and fail. Like they are living in a van and are broke and try to make money as street musicians. Then they do a battle of the bands thing and become an over night success. Just too deus ex machina for me.

My issue desu is the plot itself. Maybe its just me, but Band stories are way too typical and you need a LOT of skill to pull them off right.

You can predict the story beast so fucking easily. This was expected, this will lead to the rival band and the executive chick trying to push them off. There's gonna be some sappy backstory between her and Steg (I'm betting it's gonna be something as dumb as "she fell in love with him and he used her since he was gay" or other cliche like that), there's gonna be a band split moment, etc.

The problem is that Band Stories where don't experience a lot of hardship are boring because a rocker's life always sounds glamurous, but its also very taxing. Rock Cocks make it seem like it's ONLY glamorous and their attempts at drama have been super weak. It doesn't help that besides the villain executive, everyone seems to be portrayed in a positive light; Even the rival band does in side material cause they need to project the "sex positive" attitude of silphine but that takes away from the fact they are suppose to be antagonists.

Either they make something big hit them or just focus on sex scenes cause it's losing steam fast.

Not that I don't appreciate and respect the whole "sex positive" stance Slipshine has opted to take for some years now, but early comics like Chiba, Anthema and both of Sirkowski's comics did well to firmly establish who the "good guys" and the "bad guys" are even if that meant there were some particularly distasteful interactions between them. Even shit like Videogametown did well in it's storytelling by treating the material like a sex farce and having personalities clash and people sleeping with each other behind their backs and all the forced telenovella drama ensue before ending with the inevitable ensemble cast orgy.

These new Slippies refuse to crack eggs. Their omelettes suffer as a result. (with few exceptions... )

And that is not to say that stories where the antagonists are sympathetic in sex doesn't work either. The problem is that it doesn't work in THIS type of story. Music Band stories tend to work best into either stories about overcoming all odds or having to endure the hardships of stardom. Rock Cocks does neither. They basically coasted for like three volumes and we are just TOLD things are difficult; Now there is a chance they could ramp it up now, but my point it that the mellow stance for stakes have really dwindled expectations so now they have to work twice as hard to wow people.

In shorter words, I feel the writers thought they could write a Rock Band story like they wrote their previous webcomic Blaster Nation but didn't realize you can't write a rock band story like you do a slice-of-life story.
