My thoughts are that it was an extremely mixed bag. Varied wildly from genuinely thoughtful stories to complete edgelord for the hell of it garbage.
I do kind of regret that it became such a cash cow for Avatar Press, because those guys suck.

I'm ambivalent. Crossed has always been kind of a mediocre property so it doesn't strongly affect me one way or another. The central conceit always seemed really lame and hackneyed to me. Like, why would a post-apocalyptic story about man's inhumanity to man even need the "evil virus" explanation? Human beings are capable of being horrible bastards without the added help. The excessive, juvenile ultraviolence might actually be effective if these were seemingly ordinary people committing these atrocities and not zombified maniacs.

I remember fondly the Ennis issues (except maybe the patient zero storyline), and how out of nowhere Alan Moore showed up and made the Riddley Walker of our generation. Good stuff.
I remember some of the edgy shit Lapham did and I find it more comical than disturbing.

It reminds me of my crossed script "the first day" which reveals that the cross virus was created by a joint european defense task force from a virus found on the shroud of turin. That the patient zero was unaffected because he was basically a crossed anyway eating what he wanted, fucking what he wanted, hurting what he wanted. bascially a murderous asshole who appeared meek as hell because he was driven by the question of how does he profit from every choice he was presented.
While at the same time hinting the virus has periodically appeared through out history causing civilizations to fall, entire cultures to be extingished and only the massive interconnected existance we lead allowing it to be so devistating.
It ended with patient zero esentially protecting a farm full of women when its revealed he has some measure of control over the infected because he orders a small group of infected to FREEZE ASSHOLES and they comply and stop instantly
