Star Vs already pissed away the chance to have the first half of the story show how they get together and the second half be what they do afterward. (Halfway point for the series as a whole would've been in S3A, since S1 was only half the length of other seasons.) Seems like a lot of people feel like "near-death" doesn't count unless the character's losing limbs or some shit. There are so fucking may people who've said "Moon should have killed Toffee and not Star, because he killed her mother but all he did was break Star's wand." They apparently forget he did that through threatening to kill her friend in front of her, because he lived.
And I guess to be fair in a more meta sense, you can say it doesn't count because as a kids' cartoon literally no one in the audience ever thought Marco would die permanently. But then by the same token you could also argue about Moon's mother's death not counting too since it was entirely offscreen and she was never a real character in the show anyway.
Basically it's just not gonna get that dark or seriously explore Marco and Star's PTSD; Toffee's death was about the upper limit of what they're allowed to do and even that was probably kind of pushing it/something they could more easily do because he's not human.

I guess they haven't really been in a super traumatizing situation beyond Battle for Mewni though, and the scene where Star's dead is probably as far as Disney would let them go. Even finding out Moon's fine is probably going to happen at the end of the first S4 episode and transition into trying to get her back in the second.
The characters having some kind of trauma would be more interesting than most of S3, but then on the show's side it's not like a whole season of shipping plots actually allowed for that either..

Eclipsa being evil would have been the best thing on this list. Like it could be possible to have her not be wrong for fucking a monster, but still be evil. Could've been a pretty good twist for Globgor to be a decent guy and Eclipsa a bitch who manipulated him and the actually dangerous one, instead of the whole ugly family apparently having done nothing wrong ever.
But of all things, I am glad they didn't do Moonfee. There were problems with the Moon the Undaunted flashback, but for a show with so much shipping drama I'm glad none of that ended up having anything to do with Toffee. I agree the shippers would have gone nuts, but I'm just not sure the crowd that created Monstar is the one the crew should have been playing to.
What would have been more acceptable to me than Moonfee in that area if they wanted him to be more sympathetic + I guess more thematically resonant could have been Toffee having a friendship with Moon and/or being genuine about monster rights in his interactions with Comet --> Comet stabbing him and his army in the back at some point after openly acting like she wanted to make peace and Toffee retaliating --> Moon having to step up as the new queen and take him out because it's what's expected of her, despite realizing he was in the right, and Toffee then beginning a crusade against the Butterflys and magic specifically. Yeah, pretty similar to how the Moonfee scenario would work but man I just do not have room in my life for sad cucked Toffee.
I really was mostly fine with his backstory though. Sometimes there's no tragedy and a bitch is just a bitch.

We'd known that Toffee was a monster prince for a very long while, even before S2 ended. What's worse is that, from what we'd been shown of Mewni, Moon was a dictator of sorts considering the squalor the peasants live in (which is retconned later on) and this was only reinforced by her confidantes being the MHC, one of which is a sadistic demon nympho and the other an ignorant jailor.
There was so much room set up that could show that something happened between Toffee and Moon that put them on such divergent paths, with Toffee being a master planner lurking in the shadows, and Moon being a tyrannical queen, an "Iron Butterfly", in the pursuit of finding Toffee again. All of it could have been built up to Moon symbolically castrating Toffee in front of everyone.
Instead, it's not that they're not in a relationship, they don't even know each other. How is the audience supposed to be engaged when the characters aren't even interacting with each other prior to an event that was so tremendously hyped up? Nefcy herself said that Toffee was a "Magneto-like" character, one who was right, but was going about his methods in a very, very wrong way. I wanted to see Toffee before he became a villain.

Not arguing with that sentiment, honestly; just think there were ways to do it without them being in a relationship. A shipping relationship, that is, since not knowing each other in the past beyond that one scene was a pretty bizarre revelation (even in S1 Toffee interacted with Star from a distance more than that before Storm the Castle). I think there was also a risk of giving Moon TOO much of a backstory with him and raising the question of why Star comparatively is doing so little, but then I'm not sure that was a thought on the crew side since probably they had the backstory in mind from the beginning, most likely minus the Eclipsa stuff, and it was just fans reading too much into things.
I do think we could've seen more of Toffee with Comet to give the "Magneto" stuff more of a basis than Nefcy's headcanon. Like a scene of them interacting leading to his motivation to kill her, or even Toffee in the present, like during the Realm of Magic scene, mentioning what his original goals had been so it becomes clear his priorities have become massively twisted over time. But now they've also retroactively made it 100% clear that Comet was completely in the right and Toffee's grudge was from even before HER, so everything just stays black and white (not that I expected Comet to be evil after those episodes, but there could've been more ambiguity than what they went with).
I guess for me it's more that, after seeing how Meteora and Eclipsa went, I prefer they just kept Toffee a villain and essentially wrote him out than making his backstory too grossly sympathetic or something. I think Ludo's the only villain they've struck a decent balance of villainy/sympathy with.

Star Vs. seems to have a too many cooks in the kitchen kind of situation. Everyone seemed to have a different idea of what the show was that it ended up being one giant confused monster.
Season 1 feels like a generally episodic monster fighting show with zero plot being put in until halfway through the season (which would explain why nothing has been done with Monster Arm, as I don't think there was originally a long-term plan with that).
Season 2 continues doing a mix of plot/episodic stuff and the plot feels like it's heading in a certain direction but then they just change their fucking minds and drop the Earth setting, Jackie, Toffee and bunch of other shit in favor of poorly thought out racism allegories.

I apologize, it was heavily-implied speculation by the fans. Up until the Princess Moon episode, all we'd been given was that Toffee was a Septarian, along with Rasticore, which confirmed them to be the same species in the Guide to Mastering Every Dimension. It was largely presumed by the fans that Toffee was either an "elite" Septerian, given his significantly greater regeneration capabilities compared to Rasticore, or Toffee was a Septarian / Mewman hybrid, given that Toffee lacks the "fan" and has hair.
Of course, in Princess Moon, Rasticore has his arm bitten off and regenerates it right away to high-five his own hand, begging the question of why he regenerated so slowly throughout the show, and why his eye and arm can't regenerate despite The Darkest Spell not being used since Moon flubbed it. There's also the confirmation that, apparently, ALL Septarians are hard to kill because of their regeneration.

Eclipsa was hyped as a big bad during Season 2 and they were making the parallels between her and Star feel sinister, but it turns out she didn't do nuthin' and she was actually a good guy or whatever

Season 1A was rife with executive meddling, which is painfully obvious up until the Mewberty episode. However, 1B had a change in animation studios, meaning the extremely-fluid action scenes were dropped for more static-y, still shots. The animation only hits one final high note in the last episode of S1, and we never see that art-style again. However, the change in animation worked, because it allowed Star vs. to get a plot ball rolling.
S2 was when Volpe was basically carrying the team, because he was the only major staff member who had worked on a long-running, plot-bassed cartoon: Avatar. It was because of the proper pacing and finding its own ground that S2 achieved PEAK PERFORMANCE once the BonBon episode dropped.
S3 is when Cotugno and Hirsch started swinging their dicks around and, without someone like Volpe to keep things together, ruined everything by introducing plot elements that had no business existing, especially in a series that was already halfway over.

Yeah, I remember some of that; was wondering if there was some other detail I'd missed before the spellbook. I personally never thought the hair was anything significant since I think a few other vaguely reptilian background monsters may have had hair, but I also thought his regeneration ability was supposed to be unusual. I had thought it was a natural trait of the species but something had made his abilities greater (a theory I believed was that he may have known Eclipsa in the past and it was the result of one of her spells or something. Actually I think the spellbook maybe did imply she could have met him but nothing past that.
The Rasticore stuff really does bother me. I THINK what they're actually going for is that getting the entire body destroyed means longer regeneration because it's just happening naturally, and that Rasticore's an edgelord and just removes parts of his body for more badass replacements because he can and then just regrow them anytime, and nothing really contradicts that. But placing all those scenes of him regenerating slowly next to what they've shown with Toffee did feel like they were setting up some comparison that never happened.

The fan-canon is that, while they were dating, Toffee was taking Seth's indoctrination, which made him very "boring" (a callback to Marco's insult to him in the first season) and "serious", so she gave him the nickname "Toffee" to tease him, since Toffee is a very tough candy, and she loves sweets. She even gives him a 9/10, only docking him a point because of that bad-boy behavior.

I think the exact moment they decided something was up with Moon's arms was Crystal Clear since Eclipsa in the crystal has a purple hand. A lot of fans missed that before the previews/episodes showing it more closely came out, because the original scene was dark enough that it looked like just part of her dress or something, but by then it was there. Face the Music then has Moon also wearing gloves that cover her whole arm despite also wearing a t-shirt and jeans, implying there might be some specific reason for it.
So I guess at the beginning of S2 it wasn't an error; they just hadn't planned it then and it became one in retrospect. Though since even Stump Day shows Moon with normal arms I guess someone could seriously argue the marks just come and go, since apparently even the crew doesn't know what's going on there.

For me, Star Vs feels like a show that has metamorphosized a few times over the course of it's life. As such, it has some awkwardness in between it's "stages" of life. In conception it was about an autistic loli with no powers dreaming up a fantastical world. Nefcy likely already had a whole cast all lined up for this show, and some had a difficult time transitioning to the show's new story of an autistic teenager who actually had powers.
Brittney was the most obvious example of this. A stock snooty rich bitch character serves well as an antagonist to an outcast humble everygirl character, but is practically toothless when set against a protagonist who is richer and more popular than her in the school. Lars is another example. So once the writers found their groove in season 2, they basically just ignored/stopped using the characters who couldn't mesh with the new Star Vs.
But now Star Vs is undergoing another metamorphosis, so season 3 is basically another awkward transitional period. Hopefully the writers will hit their stride again in season 4 and the show will end on a strong note.

Probably none because it seems Nefcy ended it on her own terms (i.e. she wasn't pushing for S5 but the show got unexpectedly canceled).
Based on what she's said recently, she was unsure if they'd get S4 or not, took a gamble and designed S3 so that it'd end with some huge obvious cliffhangers, it got renewed and so then she and her crew consciously chose to write it as the final season and didn't ask for/plan out more. At the moment she doesn't have any plans for continuing Star stuff past this season, but said that she'd be interested if Disney ever wanted her to do more with it in the future, I guess like a special or something.
I actually doubt they would have gotten S5 even if they'd wanted one since S4 seems to be the limit for most Disney stuff these days, and also S4 was given the green light relatively late compared to S3 so maybe Disney wasn't sure about even that-- but with all that in mind it seems they didn't/don't want or expect a fifth season anyway.
