As someone who hated the use of MJ title in Homecoming, I can sort of see the logic they used. Namely, they have no intention of ever introducing the classic MJ, and the only way to shut people up is to use up that name on the existing love interest. She isn't actually MJ in any way, but MCU wanted to stop dead any speculation that there will be any kind of traditional MJ in the future.
