Why is he so popular? He’s a corny throwback, and people love his silly ass. What about the Big Red Cheese is so damn appealing?

A kid that transforms into a superhero
He's awesome
He's a kid that can turn into the generic classic superhero, that's a fun concept similar video games and stuff.
He's not very popular.
People are so damn tired of comics trying too hard to be grimdark and serious that they want something extremely silly.
Comic fans love Shazam, and the movie is heading straight for a big release.
I like how fantastical his stories are more so than I like him. Shazam (the Wizard) doesn't die by just magically disappearing or getting stabbed, he knows his time is coming and he sits on a throne with a giant stone slab suspended above it that is obviously going to fall. A Martian queen comes to Earth and a part of her plan to conquer the world is to win a beauty contest. Doctor Sivana learns how to walk through walls by doing a lot of math while sitting in his jail cell. Mister Mind and Tawky Tawny exist.
Seeing as how you know his nickname and called him that, I'm going to assume you're really a fan reverse baiting for praise for your favorite hero.
Never cared much for Tawky Tawny but Mr Mind is one of the best comic book characters ever.
I hope they find a way to make it work in the live action sequel, if we ever get one.
Tawky Tawny doesn’t just exist, sometimes he has a JET PACK.
Dude, Kevin and fucking Bean on KROQ call him that. Calm down.
First off his getting a movie has less to do with any current popularity and a lot more to do with the fact that WB has bungled things up with all of their actually popular heroes besides Wonder Woman to the point that Aquaman and Captain Marvel are the ones getting movies. Billy isn't exactly an unpopular hero these days, but compared to the time when he was bigger than Superman he's more of a c-lister, or at least he has been. Hell, NetherRealm felt comfortable with getting rid of Billy after the first Injustice game
>C-lister
I'd think he's more of a B-lister, because he's still fairly well liked by anyone that does know him.
>Why is he so popular?
He isn't
Lots of movies get big releases that doesn't make them popular
Like Battlefield Earth or Mortal Engines
Cereal Lord is using some of the thousands he's been able to con from Warner Brothers to pay his own set of shills, because Disney's deep pockets make him jelly.
He’s a b-lister, and he was written out of Injustice because his character conflicts with the tone of the narrative. He fucking committed suicide-by-Superman because he couldn’t live in that world anymore. NetherRealm knows what they’re doing.
If we understand popular as a quantity measure, he isn't. But most people who are aware of him do like him. Personally, I've never talked with anyone who didn't. Plastic Man is similar in that way.
His solo series is one of the few DC books left worth reading
Well, Plas’ consciousness was spread out over the ocean floor for a few thousand years. That sorta thing builds character.
That's power level bullshit Plas, when he was shoved into the main continuity by Morrison.
Plastic Man is way better when he's doing his own thing, away from all that bullshit. Same with Captain Marvel.
Like the time he was a vase for three days?
Superman is just some alien know it all, captain marvel trully earth´s champion being both human and powered by earth´s myths.
>sometimes he has a JET PACK.
>He’s a corny throwback
Well you answered your own question
>power
This
It's the best power fantasy a cape writer ever came up with. He's not an alien, rich, trained by masters, etc he's just a kid who was good. And he was so good that a wizard taught him a magic word to transform into an adult and protect Earth
Because he's a corny throwback thats still full of optimism and hope, his stories are rarely "grim dark ultra violent crap" and yes i know 52 exists and that was more of a black adam story than a captian marvel story, and his stories arent political sjw identy shit. His stories are what a story should be, something enjoyable that lets you forget about the world for a bit.
>his stories arent political
Some of his earliest stories are war stories, and the first villain that comes even close to being on his level strength wise is Captain Nazi.
>sjw
I wonder how you'd feel about this early story of his that ends with him saying prospectors should leave a South American country, a war starting over oil, and the man he went there to rescue laments about the plight of the Indians at the hands of "White Men".
he makes you believe than growing up is awesome
But it´s very easy to make mr. mind work, just do the "jaws" approach which is to not show the actual enemy for more than 5 minutes total, and have him emerge from completely unexpected places.
He's nice, sincerely. It's more appealing than snark, or nicety that is obliged or forced.
Having Black Adam team up with Mr. Mind for the sequel would be amaaaazing. Either do the Jaws route like you said, or undercut his menace entirely and have him be a 'toon. I could see either approach working really well.
Dang. Ymmv regarding Kingdom Come, but reading this thread brought it to mind and I'm getting goosebumps thinking about Billy's heroism at the end.
New Trailer Monday
collider.com
It's going to play before Captain Marvel. Is this a master stroke of marketing?
His Golden Age stuff aged very, very well and outshines a lot of comics even in 2019. He's not an asshole and isn't dragged into event bullshit the way most capes are.
Dc made sure of that
>when a hero disregards someone trying to kill him to hear what he has to say
Not him but you clearly don't know what a sjw is
Yeah, that's why I said I hope they can make it work. I mean, Batman and Superman on screen should be a piece of cake to do and we know how that ended up, so I rather be cautious about it.
The best thing about this movie it's its low budget. It doesn't need to be a big budget affair since from the trailers it's obviously a more character driven story, and even if it does middling numbers by cape standards, it'd still be very profitable which hopefully will mean at least a sequel and hopefully a more diverse set of films for the future. Let's hope this is the first step to get a Booster Gold/Blue Beetle film, and everything leads to an eventual JLI crossover.
Reminder that Tony the Tiger is Tawky Tawny
Hes superhero tintin
I miss the dot eyes
I'm a zoomer and he's one of my favorites. Reminds me of middle school.
By sucking the batcock and worshipping Batman?
Not him but neither does anyone who uses the term. It can be reduced down to "person I disagree with" like so much other garbage on the internet.
inb4 I get called [insert boogeyman here], been here since 2008
A lot of it is actually crappy. The Captain Marvel Jr. books are horribly dated today and the Marvel Family stuff as well. Otto Binder is a good writer and the stuff he wrote, holds up well. But that's just as true for the stuff he wrote on other characters and isn't exclusive to the Cap stuff.
Some has aged well, some not as much.
I love him !!!
>kick me
Wow, that brat's really asking for a good pounding.
There is a planet inside the earth, that has to be the most stupidly awesome version of the hollow earth theory I've ever seen.
CC Beck was so insanely far ahead of his time. By far the best Golden Age creator.
That'd be Jack Cole to me.
>asking for a good pounding.
Whoa user, these are children. No need to be lewd.
That is literally "political SJW identity shit" that complains about
>political
foreign countries entering another country to take their resources, potentially starting a war
>identity
Inherently about racial identity
>SJW
The idea that a white person doesn't have the right to exploit a native is inherently social justice and Captain Marvel is inherently a warrior.
You're a fucking faggot who gives shit he is told is okay (because you've never read a CC Beck Captain Marvel comic) a pass and has absolutely no critical thinking ability.
Mortal engines had a big release? Thought it flopped big time
Oh damn, Cole is really good too. Fuck. I'm sure there are others I've never even read too.
It had a big release, and it flopped.
When you're a kid, you just like heroes.
When you're an adult you like what a hero stands for.
Huh. I literally just realized that Leo Lion from Astro City might also partially a Tawky Tawny reference (in addition to Hanna Barbara cartoons). That's really cool.
He's fun.
Dosen't Superman also do that sometimes?
