The classic seasons involved a _lot_ of script rewriting and collaborations by the entire writing team. If you saw some draft scripts, they had quite a few plot holes, poor characterizations, and jokes that are stupid, unfunny, or miss the mark. For example in The Way We Was, the scene where Marge burns her bra at a feminist rally had a couple of rather tasteless jokes they took out of the finished script, and glad they did.

Not the choking itself, but the context or what drove Homer to do so can be.

In Lisa's Rival the subplot with Homer's sugar pile was originally twice as long and involved him throwing acid in an old lady's face.

She's a girl so she can't get slapstick like Homer or humiliated like Bart and his penis.
