Did test audiences fuck us again? I remember Mignola and the directer saying at panels how the tone was going to be darker than the Delo Toro movies.

That's what I was hoping for, but the first trailer pretty much had the same tone as the del Toro movies.

A Hellboy movie should be rated R, that's for sure, but it shouldn't look like this movie either.
Also, for all of Del Toro's flaws in relation to the source material, he managed to deliver a lot of what makes Hellboy great in two PG13 movies. My younger brother (4 years younger than me, so he would have been about 10 when the movie came out) got mega-fucking hooked in it and it's probably the one comic book he ever read (though I did got him into Black Hammer recently) and all of this love comes from having seen those Del Taco joints.

It's not lighter, it's snarkier. Del Toro very much has a bit of a silver age or maybe bronze age, Claremont / Wolfman type of air, if you get what I mean. Things were a bit light, sure, it is a fantastic movie after all, but they were also serious.

All the fucking marketing for this was that it would be close to the comics when it clearly isn't. What's the point of this and why is mignola shilling it so hard. Del Taco took his liberty but it looked great and the story wasn't to ridiculous, everything I've seen from the trailers is straight up horrible

I have non-ironically pondered about this, it feels a lot like Mike kinda got into a bad deal, realized this and is trying to save face.
I mean, this movie was announced like a month before Del Toro swiped the academy awards, wasn't it?
People love to mock Del Toro for his tons of unfinished shit but there's a reason for that, the same reason why we never got Hellboy 3, the man is perfectionist as fuck and won't work on something until it 100% matches his vision. Join this with him being a huge fan of Hellboy (and having pretty much the same influences as Mignola) and it's lightning in a bottle we'll never recapture, with Hellboy or anything else.

I would've forgiven a lot of things, honestly, but they stepped on everything they possibly could've to make me not root for this movie.

See, even if the movie by some miracle turned out decent, theres still those inexcusable sins.

Bruttenholm, Daimio, Alice, the makeup, the RHoD, the lighting, and the tone are all irrepairably terrible and a spit to the face of the source material. You cant fix this with clever editing, you cant be misled by a bad trailer, these are ingrained inherently into the script and visuals.
