it's either pity porn focused on genuinely despicable people (a quiet endorsement of their behavior), or the worst kind of sadism, reveling in genuine disgust for them. either way it's pure degeneracy, despicable evil garbage. and the one thing it's absolutely not is in any way humorous.
these works very deliberately (eg. in the very thin veil of anthropomorphic cartoon forms they lay over the characters) make timeless and crystal a horror that is defined by its irresistible transience (the human error being the subjects insistence upon their fantasy of timelessness).

MM&O is set in America somewhere along the west coast. All the trappings of the setting points towards that, plus they're shown using green American dollar bills as money at multiple points. There are occasional 'Strailian turns of phrase because Hanselman is from Tasmania.
Also, that strip is horrifying, good lord. Although I'm not exactly a model citizen myself, it makes my skin crawl seeing how gross and insanitary Megg and Mogg are. It's a very real kind of grody. They live in a dirty house that's full of trash and they're perpetually wallowing in their own filth so that it starts to inform who they are as people. I've known people like this, although no one as bad as any of these characters except for one very WWJ-esque dude I briefly went to college with. I'd bet even money that if you met Megg in real life she'd reek of BO and stale weed from never showering and always wearing the same clothes. These characters are portraits of looming death and despair, and not just because they're diseased and depraved degenerates.

I was thinking of that one but it didn't strike me as immediately relevant to my post. But yeah, I'm aware that her teeth are probably nasty as hell if they're regularly falling apart from normal exertion. She probably hasn't brushed or flossed regularly in years. You can put down money that her breath is horrible. Having gone out with girls who have bad breath, that is a lot more distracting than you would think it would be. Megg being cute would not distract from that combined with her being filthy and probably incoherent from being massively drunk/high.
