Someone once explained it to me in a way that made a lot of sense. Will Smith has two modes: Sarcastic Jokey Will Smith, and Serious Dramatic Actor Will Smith. What may at first appear to be range is in fact just alternating between these two modes, and he has no range outside of that. I'd say both of them are wearing pretty thin.

If it's true that Deadshot's character sucked because Smith asked him to be more sympathetic, then good riddance, but I thought he was simply miscast, since Smith is pure charisma and it's hard to take him seriously as a bad guy. Also I prefer the Deadshot from Simone's first run of Secret Six, as sort of a douchebag who doesn't have the good sense to know he's a bad guy, but is still somewhat charming and sympathetic. But also creepy in a way the Fresh Prince isn't.
