Is astro city any good? I read that it is a series of stories taking place at different momments in a single continuity’s timeline, where a single world went from the golden age to the modern time without rebooting and time has properly passed.
To me, this sounds very appealing, but execution tends to kill great ideas and elevate bad ones.
Why yes, it is the best superhero comic ever written.
Noah Foster
Definitely. There are parts that are better than others, The Dark Age is a famously weak portion and some folks aren't as fond of the newer issues as they are of the older ones (personally I like them.) Worth a look at the very least.
Kevin Williams
I’m going to be picking it up based on the premise alone. My biggest fear is that it will end up being this kind of baity comic, where the concept sounds interesting, but nothing relating to it ever really happens.
You know, like how most gundam series promise mecha action, but instead deliver a lod of crying about war and naked children floating in space.
Jace Gray
Dark Age isn't that bad. Only it took too long to finish at the time, plus the hiatuses. As for the series, its Busiek love letter to superhero comics.
Ryder Gomez
>Reading 90s trash
Landon Mitchell
>Not reading 90’s trash It’s the best kind trash.
Lincoln Bell
Woah. The series is more focused in character study than an overarching story. Sometimes from the civilian perspective. There are some longer arc later in the run, but it always reverts back to stand alone stories. The Dark Age is the longest arc of the series focusing in two brothers and how they saw superheroing and Astro City change through the decades.
Dominic Thompson
Note you should read up to the Confessor arc, if you don't like it by then. It won't improve for you. It helps having a passing knowledge of the big two properties, kind of like Moore's "Top 10"
Jaxon Gray
Is there any mecha series that doesn't do that though? The whole genre is just one big tease.
Jayden Rogers
It's fucking great. After reading it, I picked up some of Busiek's mainstream work and was surprised at how bland it was. But he's fantastic in his own universe. I particularly liked the one about the Z-list henchmen trying to live their lives. Good stuff, and FUN without being silly and stupid.
Nicholas King
Sounds pretty close to the impression I got. Kinda like an anrhology or pulp magazine set up around this world where superheroing is not something that began 15 years ago.
Passing knowledge how? I can identify the various archetypes and have read a few runs for each company. But I always found myself burned by events shaking up whatever I was enjoying, so I never delved too deep. My biggest knowledge base would be cartoons.
My favorite comics are the ones dealing with family themes and civilian life for heroes. In recent comics, these would be Superman’s early post new52 run where clark was settling in after his return, Superior foes of spider-man where Boomerang just can’t stop being scum even if he tries and Super-Man coming to grips with his powers and his situation as a government project.
Justin Rogers
I think Brent Anderson's art sucks so I only read the first trade.
>I picked up some of Busiek's mainstream work and was surprised at how bland it was. Eh, Trinity was bland-ish, but Secret Identity is his best work and one of the best comics DC has ever published. Busiek and Immonen created something truly special.
Eh.... Megas XLR? It may be the only mecha series that actually takes advantage of the fact that ot is a mecha series.
Aiden Lopez
General passing knowledge. Like you recognize the Superman, Batman, Fantastic Four, Dr Strange, Wonder Woman analogs.
Michael Torres
>Secret Identity is his best work and one of the best comics DC has ever published. Thanks, will look it up.
Nathaniel Edwards
it's why I still respect D.C. to some extent, the experimental nature of the title was magnificent, the execution wonderful, read Astro City O.P. & start living your best life.
Luke Butler
DC had nothing to do with this comic, the title was first published at Image.
Mason Ortiz
This but semi-unironically, it's top 5 ever for sure
Bentley Garcia
G Gundam Expected: Street fighter with mechs Got: Street fighter with mechs
Blake Edwards
If you end up liking this, try Marvels. Or maybe better: try Marvels anyway. You may like it.
Ryder Barnes
That's what gundam is you shit ass. Go watch g gundam if you want your balls juggled.
Adam Martinez
Ayy it was on vertigo
Adam Hughes
>Is astro city any good? Huh, so kinda like Superman And Batman: Generations or something.
Zachary Lee
sorta, basically if the comic is not explicitly given a date inside(like say a flashback story to the fifties) then usually it's supposed to be more or less set at the time of publication, so Astro City's modern day started out set during the mid 90's, and in the most recent issues that aren't flashbacks it's set in the present day, so characters have aged and changed over the years
Dominic Cox
His longer runs are all bland. His limited series like Secret Identity, Marvels are great. Creature of the night is shaping up to be great as well.
