I guess, he was mentioned by J'onn in an earlier issue in one of the flashback scenes.

There's also the fact he's got a bunch of gold chains on him, Malefic's signature.

Apparently we now have Green, White, Yellow and Red Martians.

Old continuity you had the Saturnians... which were basically just Red Martians as they were a colony of Martians who settle one one of the Moons of Saturn and became Red... for some reason. Then Greg Weisman while setting up the backstory for the YJ animated series brought that concept back to his version of Mars as just Red Martians (which were only mentioned in the Tie in comics until Season 3)... and now I guess it's come full circle with the Saturnian's (who still ALSO exist since we saw J'emm during No Justice) inspiring Red Martians in an adaptation and then being introduced into the main DCU.. or something.
